found this today...about 5 feet away from my first 1700's coin...a 179? draped bust largie...any one have any idea what it is?

On front below the bust I can make out what I think is " THE STATESMAN" and on the back I can make out "ALABAMA"

Help!

1852 Franklin Pierce Campaign Medal in Brass. Measuring 26mm across and listed as Sullivan-Dewitt FP 1852-5, this lovely token is one of just a few varieties made for President Pierce. His handsome appearance should have prompted a larger output of items bearing his likeness, however, his medals are among the scarcest. This particular example bears his portrait in civilian clothes facing right. Around: "Gen Frank. Pierce The Statesman & Soldier". The reverse reads: "For President - Gen. Frank. Pierce - Of - New Hampshire - For - Vice President - William R. King - Of - Alabama." Roped edge, holed as made. In excellent condition; light toning on both sides; small blemish at 7 o'clock on the obverse.Sold for: $49.00.

Did you notice that the image in these pics is flipped 180 degrees (versus the hole)?
Certainly, a different variety.
Don.....

Is there a token? That could account for the die axis being up and down opposed to up and up like on a medal.
