That is an awesome find, it is probable that it was overloaded intentionally in order to destroy it.
there are many possible scenarios where such an action could have been justified.
I’m not sure if anyone has kept track of my cannon search but I’m hoping i have enough pieces to Figure it out now.View attachment 1885638View attachment 1885641View attachment 1885643View attachment 1885645View attachment 1885649View attachment 1885651the length is 43in, if I laid it out correctly.
It has a 2in bore .I’m going to do my best to respond promptly to any questions. Thanks
Awesome find, I would be beyond excited with a find like that.
They would have not blown it up intentionally. The iron pieces could have traveled quite a distance and they didn't exactly have bomb shelters back then. The problem with American cannons cast in iron was so bad, George Washington insisted they be tested BEFORE being sent to the troops, and yes, it is documented some continentals were injured or killed when one blew. There were a LOT of iron furnaces in the colonies, you might check for a nearby iron furnace operating in Revolutionary War times.
(My cat taught me all I know about this.)
Yeap destruction of obsolete equipment, destruction of captured equipment, destruction of equipment to prevent enemy use, structural testing etc..........
