I can’t it’s winter.I don’t think I’ll make it another winter without finding out what this is.I was hoping with my latest barrel piece and a bore size it could be figured out.

Oh it's not a repop. It's a most excellent find! Now my gut feeling says Rev War. The Americans had an awful problem with cannons blowing up in the field. Flawed iron. The only place in NY you MIGHT find an iron gun from the War of 1812 period would be around the Great Lakes or Plattsburg area.

I agree with Smokey .The way the three big back pieces were pretty much together and the rest I’ve found spread hundreds of feet apart in front of the area I think it blew.

that thing could have killed someone when it blew... what actions took place where it we found? That might help date it.

That is an awesome find, it is probable that it was overloaded intentionally in order to destroy it.
there are many possible scenarios where such an action could have been justified.

Yeap destruction of obsolete equipment, destruction of captured equipment, destruction of equipment to prevent enemy use, structural testing etc..........

spiking the gun would have been a lot easier and a whole lot safer.

They would have not blown it up intentionally. The iron pieces could have traveled quite a distance and they didn't exactly have bomb shelters back then. The problem with American cannons cast in iron was so bad, George Washington insisted they be tested BEFORE being sent to the troops, and yes, it is documented some continentals were injured or killed when one blew. There were a LOT of iron furnaces in the colonies, you might check for a nearby iron furnace operating in Revolutionary War times.

(My cat taught me all I know about this.)
