Can u spot the silver?

for those of you who coin roll hunt, and rim search your dimes....can you spot the silver? I wonder how many people have missed this one?....1920 merc

I always look for the copper color. If I don't see the copper, I check it. Whether it be silver, black, or gray. All have been silver in the past. If I don't specifically see copper, it gets pulled.

I also would pull the one on the right, and check it for "2009 status". :-) I pull all the sharp looking ones, looking for 2009 dimes. Still haven't gotten a full roll, after 2 YEARS of them being in circulation, so I know they are hard to find. In fact, I have a three to one ratio of silver over 2009! So I check for those too.

I would say not too many. The shiny white tips of the reeded edge is a dead give way to me. HH Doug

I was just curious because it seems like most silver dimes I find are dirty or black, somebody is missing em..lol

Yep, always look for the copper. Keep an eye out also for bronze-ish copper colors when you are hunting halves, uncirculated 40%ers look copper if you are just edge searching.

You can also tell by the reeds, they are slightly different than clad.

Interesting I found a 1945 today that looks just like this I at first thought it was a crappy metal detecting found clad. Always check any questionable coins

When in doubt check it out. 9 out of 10 times the dirty dimes are clad, but that 1 that isn't would be a pity to lose if not checked.

I do wonder, how many dimes have I missed by just edge checking them? Probably none, but I do wonder sometimes.

Actually, I believe the cores of 40%ers are a mixture of silver and copper but an uncirculated one does have a copper tinge to it. FWIW.

If you do enough volume you can't miss them. Not to be arrogant but I spotted it in <1 second in your pic. As for halves, same thing, I've never come across a 40% that I've confused for a clad, even mint condition ones. The coloring is quite clear to me on the rim and when i slide my halves out of the rolls (i use a dull knife and rip the top crimp off and then push them out from the bottom with my thumb) you also get to see a little bit of one "surface" top or bottom doesnt matter, i can spot the silver right away whether its 40% or 90%, not to mention the "Clank" of silver is different from the "Clink" of clad :-)

nope in a 40%er the silvers in the outer coating --the core is copper however * which is why if you want to be sure to catch all the silver 40%ers half you gotta date check -- most 40%ers can be spotted by the whitish or yellowish rim color tone when looking at the rims but I had a few pass thru the rim check but when I date checked turned up to be 40 % ers --so all halves get date checked by me --do not forget about the S mint silver past 1970

I used to date check when I first started hunting, but to do volume it takes way to long.

as I said just sliding them out to see a little bit of one surface is more than enough for me, I can also spot all the proof coins from the rim / surface glance , you can clearly see the frosty cameo or eagle.

Even if I miss 1/100 40%'s maybe i've missed 5-10 total out of 800 that i've found....I'm ok with that for time saved and volume searched.

Also as other people mentioned , especially in dimes, don't look for "Silver" look for the absence of copper in the rim, i've found plenty black edged dimes. I think since their surface area is so much smaller it is much easier for the silver to oxidize across the majority of the piece and become almost black.

Ivan, go read your Red Book. The outer layers are 80% silver and 20% copper. The inner layer is about 80% copper and 20% silver. When it's all said and done we're left with a coin that's 40% silver.
