Certain types of chert will not have a pretty shine to them unless they've been lying in a river or creek for some time. I agree though, the patina is suspicious. A lot of modern knappers will rub Old English furniture polish on their points to age them.

Some stone has a shine after it is heat treated and to check for wax, put a drop of water on the point, if it has had wax applied it will bead up, if no wax the water will leave a flat wet spot when it runs off.

My guess is number 2.
It is extremely hard to spot a good modern pt. even when you are holding it in your hand, becomes almost impossible when looking at a photo.
Some tell tale signs are crushing in the notch area, and if the knapper was using copper tools they will usually leave a trace of copper somewhere on the stone.
All that being said, it is still fun to play !

A good replicator that is doing it to fool someone will chip it out with modern tools then go back and finish up with antler.

Number one looks odd

Thanks for the input it is hard to tell

##5

Rww1987 & Jamey guessed #3. You have to admit I was real close at #4. I like these contest. We need prizes.

Congratulations Winners

Let me go back and edit my guess to #3, LOL
That was a fun game but darnit I was wrong again. If you stay with the types of material you know from your area there will be a much less chance of getting burned from a fake. I have seen some that you just cant tell at all.

That's why I don't buy points. I can't tell real from fake. If you find them odds are good they are real.

Hey Rock, not if you're from Missouri. I think most flint knappers start out making stuff with Burlington chert. Also, there are a lot of excellent knappers from Missouri. If you ever travel through the state, don't buy any Sedalia blades because chances are it's modern.

As much as I hate to say, this thread speaks volumes...

We had the same answer lol

Well at least #5 used to be a modern reproducton at some point in time. :)
