I found this weekend at a site I have been detecting for some time. There is no way I can say for certain that this knife was a trade item but I believe Cartouche knives were commonly traded. I have found other trade items near where the knife was found. The knife is in remarkable condition seeing it has been buried for 200 years.

Now I need to preserve it. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thank you for viewing my post and for your comments.

That is not a "Cartouche" knife, but a very nice trade knife. Cartouche knives have brass open work handles with horn or boxwood inlaid underneath the brass. I found a piece of a knife with that exact same handle intact. I will post a pic later.
