Hi folks. I appreciate all the nice comments and thanks for that warm welcome. I was told please post my articles I wrote about Castine and the Penobscot Expedition so I will post one written in in April of 2006. It is the property of Western Eastern Treasures but I was informed when the book is written I can use them in it long as they get credit. Hopefully the same here.
I can't say it will be big enough text to read but at least you can see the pictures of some ordnance finds from first 5 years there. Hopefully you will enjoy it. Be advised since 2007 most of this site is posted off limits but at the time I had permission to hunt where these relics were found.
Thanks Gary and happy reading. Scan0005.webpScan0006.webpScan0007.webpScan0008.webp

Well looks like you may have to pull out your magnifying glasses to read it. Sorry but was not sure how this post would come out. However the pics of these relics I hope you enjoy. It was a labor of love and many holes dug deep to get this history out of the ground. Any questions I can answer please send them.
Just noticed if you can't read them if you have the paper and ink can print out. Up to your if your curious. Any comments if it can be posted elsewhere if TN does not allow it let me know. I an a newbie here.
Thanks Gary

Ah yes, I remember reading that article many years ago…great article! still looking for my first french cannonball…have the broad arrow ones now and bar shot…makes me want to get out soon...

Man that was fast. Could you read it OG without a glass?

Really close to me. I spent a couple days detecting Sears Island hoping to find first cannonball but it didnt happen. Working on permissions to cellar holes in and around Penobscot Bay....maybe next year I'll find one.

Yup blows right up when you click on it and can zoom in from there...

Yup it works well, I think everything gets reformatted to the TN posting size regardless of the upload. So if a person uploads a very large picture a viewer can keep on clicking on it many times to enlarge the post picture.

Great article Gary, thanks for posting it up.

To this day it just blows my mind the incredible finds that have come from Castine including a hoard of hammered coins and Mass silver....lots of it. What Maine lacks in battle sites Castine makes up for. What an honor it must have been to hunt those sites. I think it's great that you've shared those finds and the experience with people by putting pen to paper. It would be a disservice to do it any other way. Thanks Gary

Yes I hunted on Sears Island as well were the American's blew up their own ship the Defense in Stockton Harbor . You probably know there was a book written called "Underwater Dig" . It was considered the best preserved Rev War ship ever excavated in 1981. They brought up over 3000 artifacts and spent 2000 hours on the project. BTW if your visiting Maine and want to see a great display of them stop into the Maine State Museum in Augusta. They are on permanent display. I was told they found so much ordnance they were giving away complete grape shot stands. Here is a pic of the book. Bob good luck on your quest for the CB. Are you from Stockton Springs/ IO spent a lot of time antiqueing Searsport. Scan0011.webp
