Cellar hole site gives up amazing looking 1834 strike error Large Cent. My best yet!

This cellar hole site has produced 60+ buttons, and now 4 large cents, one of which is a beauty! Enjoy.

*** Added a fourth large cent (and a second video). The back is completely toast. (making up a new post for it is tideous at this rate)

Everything pictured here is from the same cellar hole site.

(HD up close video of the cleaned finds at end of each episode)

Strangely enough, the soil it came from is just your average rocky mess that is all over New England. It came out of the ground looking crusty as they always do, and I honestly thought there was no hope for it. It had this thin yet strong resilient crust covering the entire coin. All I did was slowly remove it (for about 6 hours), and I was SHOCKED at what I was seeing, and amazed with the final result. This same strange occurrence did happen to me one other time with a beautiful looking 1865 Indian Head, whereas all the other Indians from that site looked like crusty bird poop. How this is possible, I do not know.... Is it a miracle? Act of god? ALIENS??
Thats beautiful. congrats.
Question, when you say all you did was remove the gunk for six hours, does that mean just with a tool or something? toothpick? straight pin? no peroxide or anything?
Do tell!

Great coin. Yes, please tell how you cleaned it.

I used a combination of picking and light scrubbing with room temperature hydrogen peroxide using a soft nylon brush. There were times were I would let the entire coin sit submerged in some hyd peroxide, for periods no longer than 10 minutes at a time. I know people like to heat up the chemical to excelerate the process, but I like using it at room temperature. I also keep a bowl of distilled water to rinse the coin off for progress checks.

I am nearsighted so that really helps with the picking. Once the layer of crust was loose I just used a small pin head to pry and flick it off, one tiny fragment at a time. Luckily the surface of this coin withstood the abuse of whatever mineral/organic compound mix surrounded it. I think that it was probably not in circulation long and this helped keep it preserved while in the ground for so many years.

Keep in mind that this method will vary greatly depending on many different factors, especially the corrosive state of the coin's metal. Copper that has any kind of corrosion will absorb the hydrogen peroxide and turn the metal an ugly light green - you have been warned!

Man that's nice.that large cent looks like it never even seen dirt before. I dug up a mercury dime on a road here on my farm a few weeks ago.it came out shiny and not scratch on it.I couldn't believe it,just 2 inches deep and 10 ton tractor and trucks running over it,plus I scrape the road every year.so I guess a fellow never knows.congrats buddy

Thanks all. Glad you liked my vid Grathansen.

I have another one coming soon. :icon_thumright:

without a doubt, that large cent was in uncirculated condition when it was lost long ago. you can tell from it's current condition that it had full mint luster when it was lost. that has to be one of the best condition large cents I've ever seen posted on any forum

Thats an awesome LC. The Double Die really makes that coin stand out!! Congrats.

All I can say is WOW!! Yours looks better than the one for sale!

It's a rare thing to get them like that we all know but it does happens. I got a 1847 a few years ago and it's awsome. You did great! Congrats!
