Central Ohio Stone Hand Tools

Both of these were found near Columbus. I am mostly curious about when these were likely to have been made, and their purpose.

I honestly can't tell by the pics here if they are, indeed, artifacts. Going on your word, I'll say they are.( I have no reason to doubt you and pictures never allow cruder pieces to pass as artifacts on the web) with that out of the way, I'd say they are crude hand spades. Seems like I see some wear on the one to the right. My guess, but don't be surprised when you get geofact from other guys here. They mean no bad, it's just that the absolute proof isn't visible.

Sorry, but I see absolutely no evidence whatsoever that those were ever used by man. They are just natural stones.

Looks like sandstone, keep looking alot of good areas around Cbus heck there are some good fields still in franklin county.

Here's another pic showing the base of the one. It's a curious stone. I don't believe it could be completely natural, but it's at least good to know that it is not sought after or easily recognized.

Looks completely natural, one layer was slightly harder and eroded away at a different rate than the rest of the piece. The angles are just the nature of breaking rocks, lots of geometric shapes.

I finally got around to searching the internet for info about some rocks I found many years ago. The one to the right seems to be a lot like mine. It fits so perfectly in my hand. The rock to the left was found with it and I think it may be a "nutter" stone

Your nutter is an Omar. omarolluk, google it and you will see. Completely natural.

You're not the first nor will you be the last to think you have found something that is not what it is...we've all been there, the decision you have to make is, will you accept what these knowledgeable people have told you ( there's at least approx. 100 yrs worth of experience worth of replies so far) and keep looking or decide you know better.... just because.

Thanks all for your insights. Those Omar stones are cool. So, upon looking closer, I notice symmetrical lines that form what looks like a mold of a shell where I thought the "nutter" divot was. Turning the rock over, I see many more shells. Brachiopods?

I found these the other day...i was sure i had something until i pulled them up. Just rocks. But rocks are cool too and our brains sometimes find patterns that arent there. It can be frustrating or you can chalk it up to a learning experience. Keep hunting!
