Please let me know if anyone can tell me anything about these items

These items were found on my friends property here in South carolina. His property backs up to the River/ Creek. The area is very hard to dig because of all the bottles. We either broke them or they were broken when we dug them up. 75 % of the bottls seem to be Dispensary bottles, either purple, or pink in color. We also found indian pottery, colonial pottery, and black glass. How do you go about digging a site like this? The owner has young kids and want me to remove the glass so his kids will not get cut when they are on the bank fishing. The area of glass is probably 40 ft in length. Thanks in advance for your help

geesh! that close to the river?utilize the river water with a pump of some sort and gas powered generator and like one guy said wash the soil outta that bank and grab the goodies and bag or box up the garbage.you can do it if you get set up right.

If I had found that slave tag , I'd be saying "what bottles" . If it is one , I'll vote banner .

Treasure is treasure my friend. Glass, metal, whatever. Why do you need to start detecting so quick. I'd take all of those bottles out even if it took me a month

What if you get say 200 or 300 bottles. If they are as old as you are claiming, each one could go for at least 10 or 20 bucks each. A couple of grand in hand is a nice score.

Excavate that site out first. That's what a professional would do. Besides, according to what you're saying, you wouldn't be able to dig yet anyhows.

Throw on some gloves and get those bottles out!!!
that SC Palm tree is worth well over 20.00 i believe you better add one or two zeros to the number before the decimal point... I will do a quick research an post a link..I think I have one saved but not sure

edit I couldn't find the link I thought I had,but I am 85% sure that the amber colored S/C bottle is a very expensive bottle... If you would like to post it on a bottle forum pm me an I'll give you a link to a bottle forum....

Using water pressure like was suggested would surely work. The trouble is that in the end you would end up with a huge hole. The soil doesn't stick around when you are blasting it with water pressure. just a thought.

The amber flask w/Palmetto tree from the S.C. Dispensary is a 1,000 dollar bottle. Add to it the slave tag, 2 reale, belt buckle fragment, and tales of ruthlessly bulldozing through hundreds of bottles, and I find this story a bit less than believable.

If you're telling the truth, then DON'T BREAK ANY MORE BOTTLES. Sift, document, etc. Do what the others are telling you.

I thought it was a 1,000 to 2,000.00 bottle, but I couldn't find the link to back up what I was saying....

Yeah, talk about a triple crown winner. If you found all this in one hunt your one lucky man.

The bottles can be raked out of the mud with a certain tool...I don't know what its real name is, but when I dug bottles we called it a "scratcher". It was a gardening tool like a pitch fork but the tines are bent at a 90 degree angle to the handle, like a small rake but with long tines. They make a long handled version. You'll know when you hit glass, it will squeek kind of. Just my 2 cents, Niffler

Use a three-tined scratcher to dig the bottles. When you get down to the layer that they are, GO SLOW with the scratcher. If you dig with a shovel, you will break them all. Bottles of that vintage can be worth anywhere from a few dollars up to several thousand dollars. Many, MANY pontil bottles are in the couple hundred dollar range. And you'll be VERY surprised at the value of a purple or pink SC Dispensary bottle! That would be a banner find.

Your slave tag is worth many hundreds of dollars as well--even in that condition (and no, Don't try to bend it back. Leave it as-is.)

Regards,

Buck

Keep us informed and if you could take some pics of the site. Not any that would give it away, shots of the ground. You've got a REAL treasure site. Treat it like an archaeologist. We dream of a site like yours! :icon_thumright:

Holy Crap!!! Thats An Awesome Site You Got There!!! :notworthy: :notworthy:
Remember Slow And Low Is The Way To Go!!!!
HH!!

I believe your 2R was minted in Lima, Peru; assayer's initial "N" --for Fernando or Joaquin Negron who was the assayer from 1728-1740. The date seems to end with a "6" so the date would be 1736.
Great find !!
Don.......

I think someone is pulling your leg...Notice he has not replied to any of this...

HH,

I am wondering that too :icon_scratch:He was on here at 6 p.m?

man, i hope this is real... I mean, he has nothing to prove to us... but I'd love to see a photo with all 4 items in one shot. If I see that, banner all the way...

Wow, thanks to everyone for the response. The identification of the artifacts as well as the recommendations on how to properly excavate will been real helpful.

Any recommendations on the what books I should purchase for identification purposes? Also, should I do anything to preserve these finds or just leave them as they are? Also does anyone out there have a minelab detector, if so please tell me what setting I would work best at this site.

I am not sure why a couple feel it is necessary to dispute what I found. Here is one photo of all the items together. Hopefully this will help, I did not intend to cause any types on controversy over the finds. I am new to this and I am just looking for some help.

Thanks for sharing that additional picture, I think the skeptics should be at ease now. I'd order some museum wax, especially for that slave tag and any other object which may oxidize.

Also, I wouldnt be in a hurry to annouce to your friends at home or the property owner what you have discovered just yet. Finish your excavation and take it from there. If you need an extra set of hands, send a pm lol

REMEMBER- Loose lips sink ships.

oh and did I mention.... banner!
