I have used this website to identify several Chinese coins.
Trick is, to Orient (pun not intended) the coin, so it matches
the drawings or photos. Dynasty may be a big chunk of time,
but you will get within the ballpark, of how old it is...!
Great Find...!

Thanks, that is also a good website. The coin is in poor condition and makes it so much harder to id. But like you say once you have a dynasty it helps a great deal.

Mackaydon has it right, as it shows the variety that the Reverse of the coin has - as it would give you more info of where it was made - within 8 years, in the case with this Emperor anyway...!
Very old coin...! Perhaps an heirloom of family, and personally valuable, and worn on the clothing............

I found this on an island off the east coast of Malaysia a while back that had a lot of Chinese history. It was an isolated coin stuck in dead coral so could have been worn by someone. It is possible that this was only minted for 3 years. I would be interested in what this bought in the 1700's. I know it is not worth much rice now.
