Re: "CHISHOLM TRAIL HUNT 2008" Brand the calendar October10-12th for CTH2
Yep. I see. What's that old phrase....While the cat's away the mice will play? :P

And there you are prodding 'em on Judie!

(nice)
OK..ya'll want the WHOLE story? Here ya go....
This is Wampus cat, and he was left here by the previous owner. His kids must have put the fear in him, cause he wasn't very friendly and was scared of anything that moved. Not by any means a companion of any sort. An occasional swoop around your feet, but he didn't like being picked up, so he was just something else to care for. But I thought, what the heck, if he catches a few field mice and such, I'd take care of him. Living in the country, there are no rules or laws when it comes to dogs...strays, cast offs, or even neighborhood dogs. They're are all a big problem around here. This cat has been chased up a tree more times than I can count by them. The first time he stayed in a tree for five days. Now Charlie, being the old softy that he is, decided to try and help that poor kitty outta that tree. He got the extension ladder, run it up the side of the tree, and ALMOST could reach poor little Wampus cat, when all of a sudden, Wampus decided to piss. And yes, Charlie was the recipient of a shower he surely didn't want. I won't mention all the names that cat got called that day.

Needless to say, the cat stayed in the tree.

The next day I talked with the local animal control person and his words were, "Leave the cat alone. When it gets hungry enough, he'll come down." Sure enough, after being up there for a better part of a week, down he comes.
Now. One morning three weeks ago I'm peering out the window and noticed that Wampus had been chased up a tree in the back yard on the edge of the woods.
He was pretty high up that tree, but knowing that he could get down, I didn't fret over it like the first time. A week went by and that dang old cat was still in that tree. He could climb all over the canopy of the tree and I couldn't understand for the life of me, why he just didn't climb down! Well another couple of days go by and he's still in the tree. I couldn't stand it any longer. I knew he had to be hungry and mighty thirsty, so I enlisted the help of my all time favorite husband and explained to him what we were going to do.

A basket should do the trick! We'll just tie a rope to the basket and fill it full of food and water! Then, when the cat sees all that irresistible food, he'd get into the basket and we'd lower him down and end of story! Sounds like a good plan, doesn't it!

Well, we got all the materials together. One basket, one rope about 200 feet long, food, water and the fishing pole. Charlie ties a weight to the end of the line of the pole and gives it a toss...oops, Charlie, wrong tree!

Try again. Didn't take but three tries and fishing line was where he wanted it. Pull that down through the limbs, tie the rope to the line, pull the rope back through and tie the basket on. Now we're in business! I fill that basket with goodies and we maneuver it up through the trees. Oops, two trees are in the way, so Charlie has to get the chainsaw and do a little trimming. :P We finally get that basket up there and pull up a chair and wait.....
And wait. The cat's not budging and we get tired of waiting for him, so I got a wind chime to tie onto that rope so's we could hear him if he got into the basket!

No. Nothing for the rest of the day. BUT that evening after dinner, sitting on the back deck we could see that basket moving and could see him exiting the basket. We were never at the rope when he was in there, so we just kept lowering the basket and refilling it with food and water.

Yeah, we were being outfoxed by a cat. This went on for over a week and then another bright idea hit me.
I have one of those 'have a heart' traps!

We'll just replace the basket with that, the cat steps in to get the food, and wallah, the door slams behind him and we'll lower him down! That'll do it! Has to! Well, that trap weighs a little more than that basket did, so it caused a few problems trying to hoist it up there. It was a bit too heavy for me, so I volunteered to be the one to have the guide rope that was in the woods. A few minutes later and a few choice words, I gave up.
The next day, I hosted a party. My son was here and he Charlie decide they were going to tackle this one more time...
After a bit, they get the trap back up there and we all wait to see what's gonna happen. We see the cat meandering on the top of the trap, but no luck in catching him.
The next morning I go out to the back deck to see if he had gotten in the trap. I don't see the cat but I hear a meow. But that meow sound isn't in the tree? I look down at the ground and here comes that stinkin' cat around the corner! All that trouble and the cat climbs down on his own after three weeks. Next time he's in the tree, no help from me!

I will have to say that I think he's a bit more appreciative, as he a didn't mind at all when I went to pet him.
