Thinking about getting a metal detector for a six year old who already has every toy imaginable! Not sure how he would take care of it so don't want to spend big bucks, but don't want to buy junk either. Saw one in the Target ad today for $12.88 by National Geographic. Junk? The ad doesn't give any info other than ages six and up. Would spend about $30 if there's something decent available for that price. Any advice? Thanks.

yup junk. but for a budget that peaks at $30, thats what you will get. a junky toy.

If discrimination doesn't matter— hey, what kid doesn't like to dig any all kinds of junk!— two very inexpensive, simple, lightweight, and surprisingly effective little machines are available from Hays Electronics for under $100:

Thanks for providing that link even though the prices are out of my stated range. I might rethink what we typically do and put more money into fewer gifts even though quantity is generally more important to a six year old. Should have clarified that this is not for my child, so it's not like I'll be able to control how he'll take care of it...not like I can give it and say "it's a good one, so take care of it". I still think it's a cool idea...the kid has too many toys!

Thanks for your help.
