Richard and I got out to our new spot and hit some older stuff! We are finding civil war age stuff at this newer school built in the 30s, which must have been from whatever was on the grounds before the school. I am not 100% sure if the button is actually civil war, but from pictures of them it looks like it is. Thanks for watching and happy hunting!

I was telling my brother about your button and he said to look up New York buttons. I did and found what appears to be your button. It is a pre-civil war New York Militia button probably made no earlier than 1855. If you can give us a backmark it can be dated more precisely.

dang, 4 indian day and 1800s silver, that's a great day!

SWEET! Patina on that NY Button ,Pre or Post CW , That;s a nice one ;1859 Ih Cool as well.
What was the Silver Coin for those of us who have to little patience to watch Videos ( Tho I'm sure it's a good one)

Back Mark?
Davers

pretty sure it says "Waterbury Button Co." and maybe "Extra" across the bottom... it's hard to make out

That would be cool also! We weren't sure about it being civil war, but it looks awesome either way!

Here is what my button makers book has to say about your backmark.
"*Waterbury Button Co*/Extra" Appears in several types of letters, one small & sharply impressed & the others slightly larger letters & not as sharply impressed. The former dates c.1850's & the latter c. 1860s.
Albert's button book lists it as NY-30 New York Militia: staff.
The eagle on globe and shield device, 13 stars above, the motto EXCELSIOR below.
note: There are a number of different dies of this button. It is known with the backmarks of practically every button maker and outfitter of the period, as well as many quality marks. The earliset backmark seems to be:
A. "Scovill Mg Co/ Waterbury" (1850s) RV1
An excellent button for specializing as nearly 50 different specimens are known.
