Dug this in an area where I heard there were union soldiers and have dug some items from 1850s. Any thoughts?

I think the answer to what it is will be found by identifying the brass fittings on the object. to me they look like spray nozzles .

Good idea, not spray nozzles, they have a hole in the center that's too big

I did not comment about the object because I do not recognize it. All I can say is, it is not a civil war era relic and it is not a Military device.

BTW, at the time of the civil war, hexagonal (6-sided) nuts and bolt-heads were very rare... the vast majority were square-bodied.

Thanks all for the help, I think the tractor dist cap makes sense. This site has old and new. I've found a seated quarter, 1859 pat oil lamp, powder flask, etc as well as more modern items because the site is still in use today for other things.
