Civil War Iron Or Just Farm Junk?

I found this mystery item at a Union Civil War camp this afternoon. The land used to be farmed, so this could just be some kind of farm junk

Looks like some electrolysis may be in order. The answer may be in the end that seems to be badly rusted.
