Back of boat, this is indeed made of leather, and forgot to Mention, there's a remnant of thread inside the rim, so it screwed on to something..

I looked at this one for a while. It looks like a single piece of leather shaped into a partial sphere. Not sure if that's an easy thing to do even in today's world.

My only guess was it's the base of a shuttlecock.

In the CW era they played a game that was the precursor to badminton. It was called Battledore or Battledore & Shuttlecock.

It used the same type shuttlecock as the later Badminton game - with feathers attached to a cork ball. The cork was sometimes covered with leather.

Beyond that... :dontknow:

Thanks Matt, that's the best idea yet. All other resource's I've brought it to have drawn a resounding blank. Funny, I didn't expect this to be such an enigma!!
