Civil war napsack hook?

Found this today in a very active civil war location. The small hook swivels on the ring. Haven't cleaned it up yet but seems to be made out of iron. Thanks for any help.

But what is a nap sack hook?

Proper spelling is Knapsack hook. they are latches used to close a soldier's day bag. I'm not sure this has anything to do with a knapsack but it has a hook and ring similarly like a knapsack hook.
