Civil War Snake Buckle?

I was hunting at an old farm from the early 1800s and pulled this snake buckle out of the side of an eroding hill about two inches down. I know that snake buckles were made after the civil war, but based on the age of this site it is possible that it is form the civil war. Any help on authentication would be much appreciated.

You are right! I will have to do a bit of research to see if any descendants were involved with the Boer war. Thanks for the help!

I agree. This one looks to represent something with a beak like an eagle or perhaps a mythical sea serpent

The key is how the ring is attached. Tr to find a reference, I used to have one but, can't seem to find anything anymore.
