20191215_123857.webpI found this sword yesterday and was hoping to confirm it being a U.S cavalry .
I found it on a rock outcrop overlooking the river on my property . it was only in the ground 2'' deep and overloaded my machine with an iron tone.
I took these pic with my phone as soon as I figured out what it was.
I 'm seeking advice on how to clean or preserve it.
keep in mind it is stuck in the scabbard and soaking may not work because it can't be rinsed properly I have it setting in the area of the woodstove in an effort to remove all the moisture.
dig those large iron signals guys , the next one may be something good..DSCN2476.webp20191215_123549.webp20191215_122946.webpDSCN2475.webp

Holy living ****!!!!!

it's an American Roby & Co. M1860 US Civil War Cavalry Sabre

Can you make out ANY engravings at all on the blade, anything ?

there were bits of twisted brass wire in the hole , I bet they were on the handle . oh well not enough of it to do anything with.

no the part where the makers mark will be is where all the rust is.
I will report back if I can obtain after cleaning.

View attachment 1780120Too late , while you were on here I was going for it and am happy to report success in removing the scabbard .
I'm very happy with the sword as it has just a little rust and is still pretty dang sharp.

I sprayed WD 40 and tapped on the iron tang with a nylon hammer. then wrapped the tang in electrical tape and clamped with vice grips .
tap, spray ,very light heat and repeat over and over. well guys View attachment 1780119here it is.

There you did it! Banner! :hello2:

Not much more to add than what has already been said. Definitely a find of a lifetime! Congratulations.

***I'm sure the urge is there to clean it up and find markings but I would very careful in doing so. In fact I would think twice before doing anything else to it. You may end up doing more damage than good. Let a professional restore it if that's what you are thinking about doing. Don't get into a rush. You found something amazing so treat it as such! Just my opinion.

Correct.

I love it, all i can say

Wow!!!!
Congratulations on an amazing find.

Look at the back or head of the Pommel and at the tip or drag of the scabbard and see if you can see any initials?

....and congrats on the BANNER That was incredibly quick :)

Once again I'd like to thank everyone for the kind words , help and banner votes. this is such a wonderful site of like minded people. now go out there and dig those big iron targets and shows us the goods.....

Simply one fantastic find! And you coaxed it apart in one piece too. Restoration next up !!!

Damnedest thing I ever seen! Even banner understates the significance of this find. Wow.

Even my rifle leaning in the corner of the den will get more rust on it than that baby. Truly a Festivus miracle!
