20191215_123857.webpI found this sword yesterday and was hoping to confirm it being a U.S cavalry .
I found it on a rock outcrop overlooking the river on my property . it was only in the ground 2'' deep and overloaded my machine with an iron tone.
I took these pic with my phone as soon as I figured out what it was.
I 'm seeking advice on how to clean or preserve it.
keep in mind it is stuck in the scabbard and soaking may not work because it can't be rinsed properly I have it setting in the area of the woodstove in an effort to remove all the moisture.
dig those large iron signals guys , the next one may be something good..DSCN2476.webp20191215_123549.webp20191215_122946.webpDSCN2475.webp

That is a dream dig for sure and that it came apart and got an I.D. I was sitting here thinking the old 1840 wrist breaker and it turns out to be the 1860 light calvary sword. Congratulations! Here is some more info on your sword.....

The Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber was used by US cavalry from the Civil War until the end of the Indian wars; some were still in use during the Spanish-American War. It was 41in long with a 35in by 1in blade and weighed 2lb 4oz alone or 3lb 10oz with iron scabbard. The M1860 saber received its name to distinguish it from the larger and heavier Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber that it replaced. Like its predecessor it had a brass guard, leather-wrapped grip and steel scabbard but unlike the M1840 it was smaller and easier to handle. By the end of the Civil War over 300,000 1860 sabers had been produced: 200,000 by Ames, 32,000 by Roby and many more by firms like Tiffany and Co, Glaze, Justice, Emerson and Silver. M1860s were carried not only by cavalry but also by many infantry and staff officers as the regulation Model 1850 Army Staff and Field Officers’ Sword had to be privately purchased. High ranking officers, like their European counterparts, often had their swords ornately engraved with gilding and foliage. Famous users included George Armstrong Custer and J.E.B. Stuart.

It's gonna be hard to top that. Congratulations!

Once again I'd like to thank everyone for the kind words , help and banner votes. this is such a wonderful site of like minded people. now go out there and dig those big iron targets and shows us the goods.....

You are right about those big iron overload signals. I have found 2 cannonballs that way one civil war and one British (probably war of 1812 from the site it was found on). When in doubt, dig it out (it’s the only way to know for sure).

Congratulations on the well deserved banner. Keep swingin.

You may want to record the GPS location where the sword was found as well as the direction it was pointing.
then research the KGC
great find

Congrats on the banner, crazy awesome find!

Congrats on an unbelievable find and the well deserved banner.

Absolutely, Awesome, & Amazing Find! Congrats!!!

Not much more that can be added, congrats on the banner find!

This is simply crazy, and I love it - To think of all the seasonal changes that have passed, over and over for well over 150 years. Congratu-freaking-lations on the lifetime find. I've never seen a sword like this posted here. 15/10

View attachment 1780120Too late , while you were on here I was going for it and am happy to report success in removing the scabbard .
I'm very happy with the sword as it has just a little rust and is still pretty dang sharp.

I sprayed WD 40 and tapped on the iron tang with a nylon hammer. then wrapped the tang in electrical tape and clamped with vice grips .
tap, spray ,very light heat and repeat over and over. well guys View attachment 1780119here it is.

Good job.

I am glad you had the balls to do it. :)

I bet you are too. heh

Beautiful find. I have been using something called Aerokroil or just kroil orange can. you can get it on Amazon I think.
My brother introduced me to this years ago .It works dramatically better than WD40.

location is easy to find, it's within a 1000 ft of my house. which is about 20 miles from appomattox courthouse. I don't know what KGC means.

would anyone like to estimate a value on the sword? not that I want to sell it .
some things live on my relic shelf and others in a gun safe and not sure where this one will reside

Thanks for the great tip. I'll add this Kroil to my arsenal next to the liquid wrench and pb blaster. WD-40 is fine for its intended use - Water Displacement - but IMO, is used more often for applications in which it was not intended nor ideal.

My guesstimate would be in the $700-800 range. It should be much more though, because finding a complete sword like yours happens much less frequently than a CS plate find. If it were a rare Confederate sword, prices could skyrocket depending on what it was. Still amazed by this find and even more amazed you got it out of the scabbard so easily.

I'm pretty sure the heat applied was as big a factor as the type of lube used.
heat unsticks things oils can't. and no I didn't burn it up , I warmed it up enough to expand the scabbard just enough to allow the oil in.

This is such an amazing find! Good to see that “Banner” as it is definitely worthy! Thanks for sharing and congratulations!

oh my , I had no idea of the possible value . this ones going in the safe.

That is one heckofa find and Save on the CW Cavalry Sabre and scabbard. They would have had to perform CPR on this relic hunter. Please keep us informed on the.treatment and the removal of the sabre from the scabbard. I too am anxious to see this once the sabre is freed. I also vote Banner find on this piece of History. This is truly a once in a lifetime find. This looks like a museum quality relic and will look great in your collection. Very happy for you. Continue hitting this area hard, low, and slow. No telling what may be just out there waiting to be brought up. Continued Success to you.

That is a good reminder to dry out the dessicant packs in the safe. If you have a goldenrod or similar way to control humidity in a safe, that is even better.

I do think it would make a beautiful display piece - especially if you don't have kids in the house.
