Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
I got back out to the field where I dug some buttons earlier in the week. I began my trek back to NC where I have dug some real nice relics in the past. I pulled through the private gate where I have written permission, and drove a 1/4 mile back into the woods near a large river to a series of recently plowed farming fields. I was disappointed to see that Tobacco had just been planted the day before. So I moved over to another field where I have dug other things in the past. It was a good day all in all finding some old Civilian buttons, Pottery and other iron targets. I drove back to Virginia, and was totally beat. I went to the rest room, where I washed up and checked to see if I had any ticks on me. After an inspection of my body, I felt I was ok. I got some grub, chowed down, and played with my daughter for a while. I took a shower and laid down and went to bed. Around 4:30 am, I felt something on my left collarbone. I reached over and felt to my horror, something attached to my neck!! :cussing: I arose from bed and went immediately to the bathroom mirror. I turned the light on, and saw the little nasty tick feasting on my blood! What was worse, was the purple dot underneath it! :-\ I gently pulled the pin head sized deer tick off my shoulder, crushed his sorry shell exposing the pea sized dark purple dot. Immediately I was very concerned. I waited a few hours after my wife awoke and she told me to call the Dr. I went to the Dr. office and sure enough, most likely Lymes!!!! UUUGGH! I am on my second day of antibiotics, and I have to tell you I feel lousy. Be careful out there folks.

Mikey, Mikey, Mikey,
What are we going to do with you? :dontknow:
Are you sure Maggie didn't give you a hickey? :tongue3: :laughing9:
Sorry to see that Brotha. Keep us posted on your progress.
Congrats on the relics. You always score some nice buttons.
I'm actually jealous. Not because of the finds, but because you have more hair on your chest than me. ;D :laughing9:
Stay the heck out of those tents!

Uggghh indeed! Get well.

I picked up a pint bottle of the 40% liquid and half a dozen spray cans of the military Permethrin before I retired and that stuff is awesome! The liquid will treat 40-50 uniforms.

I remember using it in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and even Florida and never had a bug bother me after treating my uniforms and clothes with it.

Here is the data sheet for it: http://www.eustis.army.mil/PDFs/DODInsectRepellentSystem.pdf

Dang Mike that looks no good! ticks are awful around here as well... Found two on me so far this year (luckily none of them have latched on). Keep on the meds and keep up the great finds buddy!
Talk to ya soon

nice finds, and hopely it isnt lymes disease .thiis brings me to the point of my reason for commenting.i know it is in the wroing categorty, but hopefully the moderaters can leave it hear until word gets out. in june of 2006 i became ill, fevers ,chills, mild headaches, couldn't cet enough sleep.i was in the hospital fr five days tgis time.i was feelinng better so itys back to work.5-6 months down the road same symptoms complicated with imperfect balance muscular control, respiratory problems, involuntary muscle jerks.hands shake.before all this took place i was an above average persn that could draw, now hell,i c ant even sign my name, and cant walk.i wont bore you with hospital stays,dr visits,or bills.too many off all three.bottom line i was diagnosed as having 'west nile virus'.let me be the first to say ,do not take this lightly!!!take precautions, all that are available.true they dont know much about it yet, their only line of defense is mosquito repellent, the stronger the better, take viamins or get vitamin b -12 shots regularly.this is still no guarentee,by any means but it helps.dont mean to scare any one ,but deer ticks are not the only thging out there that will urt you, just be prepared and happy hunting

Sorry to see you got bitten, but you're darned lucky to have noticed it so quickly. I got Lymes year before last and didn't even know it for 3 months. I wound up in the emergency room with achy joints, a 102 temp and purplish red blotches all over. Even after the antibiotics I was down 2 days and it cost me 2 more visits to a Lymes specialist to be sure it took care of everything. One of my co-workers had it for almost 2 years before a correct diagnosis and by then the joint damage was so bad she's on a 50% disability and has to have a special chair for sitting any length of time. It's sure nothing to fool around with. Good luck with the treatment!

Nice bunch of relics too!

I'm very sorry to hear about your affliction. I truly wish I didn't know anything about this, but unfortunately I do. A little over two years ago I had the fight of my life, literally. All due to a tick bite I didn't even know I had. It seems sometime or another I'd been bitten by a tick and contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. As if that wasn't bad enough, the RMSF turned into menengitis and the battle was on. Literally out of my mind and drugged up, I spent 6 days in the hospital and many, many weeks trying to get back to normal. The doctors misdiagnosed my condition three different times before my condition forced them to admit me to the hospital. The only way to tell if you have RMSF is with a test performed by the CDC. The results took 12 days to get back. 5% of these cases are fatal so I can't wait for more gov. health care. One of the 3 doctors treating me told me Lyme disease is actually very rare and most people suffer from a similar condition called Ehrlichiosis. Ehrlichiosis is an infectious disease transmitted by the bite of a tick. Symptoms: The time between the tick bite and when symptoms occur is about 7 - 9 days. This is called the incubation period. Symptoms may seem like the flu... You really should see someone who understands the difference. RMSF doesn't get better with ordinary antibiotics. Anyway... I'm not trying to scare you, just raise your awareness and issue a warning to others to be careful and prudent about stripping down and immediately changing clothes when you get out of the woods. I haven't stopped hunting, camping, or doing anything outdoors, but I am very conscious of how bad it can get.
Get well soon...
Saftgeek.

These bugs are dangerous.... Here never stung me to one. :-\

That's horrible. I wish you feeling better soon.

Early in April I came home with one of those buggers stuck to me. I pulled it off and placed it in a small container, CALLED THE HEALTH DEPT AND DROVE IT DOWN TO THIER OFFICE. A week later they called and stated "yes, it is the kind that carry lyme" lucky for me it was not infected and the red spot was gone in a week. I carry 3 cans of bug spray with me at all times now. go get some antibiotics for it.

Sure hope its not infected with Lymes and all will be well, Mike.

Nice finds - were they found using the Etrac or GPX?

This is serious stuff, and I'll be honest to say that I didn't take it serious enough. Thank you
