Relic Hunting
I got back out to the field where I dug some buttons earlier in the week. I began my trek back to NC where I have dug some real nice relics in the past. I pulled through the private gate where I have written permission, and drove a 1/4 mile back into the woods near a large river to a series of recently plowed farming fields. I was disappointed to see that Tobacco had just been planted the day before. So I moved over to another field where I have dug other things in the past. It was a good day all in all finding some old Civilian buttons, Pottery and other iron targets. I drove back to Virginia, and was totally beat. I went to the rest room, where I washed up and checked to see if I had any ticks on me. After an inspection of my body, I felt I was ok. I got some grub, chowed down, and played with my daughter for a while. I took a shower and laid down and went to bed. Around 4:30 am, I felt something on my left collarbone. I reached over and felt to my horror, something attached to my neck!! :cussing: I arose from bed and went immediately to the bathroom mirror. I turned the light on, and saw the little nasty tick feasting on my blood! What was worse, was the purple dot underneath it! :-\ I gently pulled the pin head sized deer tick off my shoulder, crushed his sorry shell exposing the pea sized dark purple dot. Immediately I was very concerned. I waited a few hours after my wife awoke and she told me to call the Dr. I went to the Dr. office and sure enough, most likely Lymes!!!! UUUGGH! I am on my second day of antibiotics, and I have to tell you I feel lousy. Be careful out there folks.

Mike, I'm sorry you're feeling that bad buddy. When I got mine I had bad symptoms for a few days, but it sounds like yours may be worse than mine were. In all seriousness, get well buddy!

Sorry to see you got bitten, but you're darned lucky to have noticed it so quickly. I got Lymes year before last and didn't even know it for 3 months. I wound up in the emergency room with achy joints, a 102 temp and purplish red blotches all over. Even after the antibiotics I was down 2 days and it cost me 2 more visits to a Lymes specialist to be sure it took care of everything. One of my co-workers had it for almost 2 years before a correct diagnosis and by then the joint damage was so bad she's on a 50% disability and has to have a special chair for sitting any length of time. It's sure nothing to fool around with. Good luck with the treatment!

Nice bunch of relics too!
I too had Lyme and Erticulosis (or itis), (hope I spelled it right), at the same time. BOTH tick born diseases. Felt like I was DYING!!!!!!! For 4 days and nights I would shake uncontrollably, and take motrin. (didn't know what I had). Every night my fever would break and I would SOAK our bed! Then about 2 hrs. later, my fever was back. Finally, on the 5th day my wife said she had had enough and so had I! After 11 hrs. in the ER, They sent me home on antibiotics. My fever actually reached 104.7! The next day my own physician saw me and asked if they had checked me for Lyme. I said no, and he sent me down to have blood drawn. The next day he put me on different antibotics,(stronger), and told me that I had BOTH tick born pathagens! A tick has to be engorged on you for AT LEAST 24 hrs. to transfer the disease. But, better safe than sorry. If you went through what I went through, taking a few antibiotics is the safe bet! I had to be on this stuff that actually made my stomach sick for 21 days. I'm telling ya, I actually thought I was dying. Now after I hunt the wooded areas, I strip, wash my clothes, and take a shower right away! Don't wait, it's not worth it. Hogge

From what I have learned speaking with friends of mine who are physicians, the red circle may be an indication of Lyme's. I stress the word MAY.

I have had many tick bites each year, including a bunch this season (including at least one on my "naughty bits"). All of my Dr. friends share the same opinion that if you get the tick off within a few days you should be fine, even if you have the telltale circular red patch. You can tell how long the tick has been there by how swollen it is with blood. They also state that unless you develop other symptoms within a few days, such as fatigue, headaches, fever, aches in your joints you should have nothing to worry about.

Unfortunately in this day and age many physicians are more business owners than advisors. They are quick to have you come in for an office visit (for a charge) and recommend you see specialists (for a charge) who are in their network.

Did your Dr. do a blood test before prescribing antibiotics? Or did he prescribe because it is "most likely" Lymes.

(I had a dog that eventually dies from another tick-borne virus that was treated as Lymes. A proper diagnosis would have saved its life had they realized their mistake earlier.)

Sorry to hear about the lyme Disease , Congrats on your Finds !!

sorry to hear Mike , take care and be well.

You Easterners are scaring the hell out of me. Yes, we have ticks in Colorado, but supposedly only in the spring and only in the mountains, but RMSF is supposed to be the worst, as was pointed out previously. I just spent a week in Georgia. Last day of digging was Tues., back to the airport on Wed. and Thursday night I felt the crawling of a little georgian on my neck. LUCKY for me, it (I assume it is a she as many bloodsuckers are) had not fed yet. Imagine that! Dodged that bullet. Maybe I will just hunt there in November, and stick to the plains otherwise where there aren't even any bushes, let alone trees. (signed) Tick free and loving it!
