Clad Proofs and 87s

Clad Proofs and '87's

I'm starting to accumulate a decent handful of each of these. What does everyone else do with theirs? I'm sure some of you throw them back into the wild, but has anyone been successful selling these on ebay, craigslist or a local coin shop? I'd rather not tie up bankroll in clad if I can get more than face for them.

Hey bblair Nada clad is crap. No one will BUY IT its not easy to sell your nice silver coins for more then scrap. I was hopeing all the clad lovers would tell us all about the big money they get for there clad. NADA NADA NADA!!!!! Not one person can tell us how much clad is worth?? And all the fighting about marking coins for nothing?? The coins are so pretty what ever. The more clad lovers keep the less i have to dump every week so for that thank you........................

For one thing the coin shops are stocked and restocked by the people who had the foresight to stock away the coins that were rare enough to one day be worth something. They are the key dates, the low production coins that are needed to complete a set, like the 1909 S VDB, 1914D, and 1931S cents, the 1916 Mercury dime, or even the 1939D and 1950D Jefferson nickels. The 1987 Kennedy half is one of those coins which you can find and own for nothing more than FV which has the chance to go up in value because of it's extremely low production figure. It is just a matter of waiting until the demand is stronger than the supply. I save everything that I get that I feel will one day be worth more than it is now but, to each his own if you need money then by all means sell whatever you want or can. Check on Ebay and see what does sell, I know people have been getting extra for Ikes and copper cents, Wheats have always brought 3 cents. I have one book that includes a Proof of each year and then I am working on another set of just Proofs to have, maybe try selling them on Ebay as a set if you have enough.

Useless clad, useless clad, Lol, Oh yeah I sold 24 gold plated halves at a coin shop in the Mall for 20 dollars and I made 8 dollars, enough to buy lunch with. Useless clad, useless clad.

Use your clad money to search for silver. Silver is worth something and will go up for sure. I still wait for some one to tell me what clad they sold ?? Lets wait for 20 years silver could go ski hi by then. Dump the clad and save the silver. Most clad is like all the new baseball cards they just made to much. I still think we should make cannon balls out of clad!!! I saved 26 proofs am going to sell them to buffboy. Let me say it again SILVER SILVER SILVER!!!!

I agree with this. I keep all the proofs and '87s I find just because I enjoy collecting them. I would probably sell them all some day, but tying up a few dollars isn't a big deal to me. I don't have a big bankroll but I search enough that I am happy no matter what I get. It's kinda like baseball to me, I think. Some people just have fun being on the field and playing, and some people don't have fun unless they are belting them out of the park. At the end of the day, just choose what you would be happiest with. If you feel like you are wasting your money keeping the clad, you can let it go and let some other collector who needs it or wants it have it.

These are coins that you might be able to sell for a profit, depending on luck and timing. There are a few people on this forum that have been able to sell them for a bit above face value, and others who were unsuccessful. About all you can do is post an ad on Craigslist and/or ebay and hope you are one of the lucky ones.

I have a collection of CuNi clad kennedy half dollars including proofs. I enjoy collecting them but have no illusions that their value won't be on the rise any time soon.
I have tried to sell NIFCs on Ebay but didn't make enough for it to be worth my time. Proofs are worth much more than face but only if the are in PF-65 condition. The proofs in the wild are too scratched up.
Despite that there may still be a market for CuNi clad kennedys some day, but are you better off hold silver with that money than copper? Most likely the best bet is silver and gold!

As you can see, there will always be someone to preach to you about how you should do the hobby. The only right way to do it is the way you want. And you need to decide what you want. It blows me away the kind of arrogance it takes for someone to bather on about how you are doing it wrong because you can't flip for a profit.

If it is only about how much money you can make doing it, don't keep anything. Sell everything worth selling immediately for the highest margin you can get and use the proceeds to do more volume. Order huge volumes, dump huge volumes, take, take, take.

If it's about collecting coins, keep any number of the highest grade ones you find. Don't expect a windfall from the ones that don't carry a margin today. They might appreciate, but not enough to make you real money. The lower mintage date Kennedy halves probably won't be worth more over face than the higher mintage ones. The circulated proofs are fun to give to kids or friends. Most ppl think that Kennedy halves are rare and love to get them.

Your options are:
1) list them on ebay or craigslist to see if someone will pay over face
2) give them out one by one to ppl you know to make someone artificially happy
3) spend them to make someone you don't know artificially happy
4) dump them with the rest of your useless clad
5) deface them and dump them with the rest of your useless clad

Amen! The answer to this depends on your interest and goals. If you like coin collecting, keep the proofs and NIFCs, at least one of each. If you are just in it for the silver and have no interest in coin collecting, either try your luck at a coin shop to sell above FV or just throw them back and hope someone who does collect finds them.

Personally I like coins but I'm not a serious collector. I will keep all my proofs (unless they are just in awful condition) and 1987s, and one of each of the newer NIFCs. The newer NIFCs are just too easy to find to be worth saving all of them I find. I'm primarily in it for the silver and mostly edge search so I won't find that many NIFCs anyway unless it is in such good condition I pull it out thinking it may be a proof.

There is no right or wrong way to do the hobby. You decide what you want and plow forward.

I sold two clad proof halves, a 1996 and a 2001 (the 1996 was in rough shape), for $2 at a garage sale less than a month ago.

At least he should be able to give them to you for face value, BuffaloBoy, after all Proofs are just more useless clad to him. This is only a hobby and he said nickels and dimes don't matter to him so as long as you are helping him in getting rid of his useless clad he should be able to do you a solid, besides you are a nice guy. All NIFC and Clad Proofs I find I Usually can sell on eBay. Really nice 2004 P halves I get generally sell pretty quick for around $2 plus postage.

I have a LCS that purchased 8 '87s for $3 each. They were in BU condition and the Gray/Grey (not sure how it's spelled) sheet stated they were worth a bit more than that. They also purchased my impaired proofs, about a dozen of them, for double FV. That wasn't too bad since I got the vast majority of them in one box. Since then I've started keeping them since I like them.

Also, I found and sold some near date/wide rim SBAs to two different coin shops. One gave me $4 each for them and another gave me ~$15 (I can't recall the exact offer as I didn't take it, instead I took $100 for my lot as I didn't think the coins were actually worth the amount offered; I felt like I was cheating them) each because those were in BU condition.

So is there value? Yes. I have cash in my pocket as proof positive. Is it as great as silver? For the proofs, definitely not. But only a fool scoffs at turning 50 cents into a dollar. It's not like I'm going out of my way to sell them to the LCS, I'm going there anyway! For the SBAs, on average my return was better than if they had been made of silver. Probably an anomaly but it is my experience. And so I will continue to ask for SBAs every time I'm in a bank. I will even buy SBAs mixed with those dang golden dollars in hopes of pulling a near date.
