Got out to an old park on Friday. managed over 50 clad coins, 1 wheatie and 1 silver rosie. But the find of the day was this coin. So tell me...why would anyone put a memorial penny in what appears to be a GOLD bezel??? I was a bit disappointed to say the least!!

Checked by a jeweler..definitely gold! I'm having a barber dime inset!

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

Hey Deb, Sure don't want to burst your bubble, but, if the holder were, in fact, gold, would it have a crack in it? It seems to me that gold would bend long before it cracked. I'm guessing something plated. As far as the zincoln in a bezel, I'm with the other folks, birthyear, anniversary or some other year of importance to someone. BTW, the date looks like 1965 to me, but, someone else thought it to be 1985.....which is it?

Pretty interesting find, people of sentiment save things for reasons only they will know. Keep swinging and happy hunting.

Gold has the tendency to crack. :read2: The finer the gold the more likely it will crack when bent this is because of its softness.

I do see some signs if what I think is flaking near the right of the crack. :icon_scratch: Hard to tell from the pictures, if you can't tell. :dontknow: Then its something you'll want to get acid tested ! :headbang:

Cool find. :o

Keep @ it and HH !! ;D :D

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

My nephew wears a 1964 memorial penny in a sterling silver bezel like that. It was the first penny he ever found with a metal detector so it is special to him. I myself wear a 1912 barber quarter in a sterling bezel. 1912 was my Grandfather's birth year who died just after I was born so I never really got to know him. I have but one memory of sitting on his lap. I have also made necklaces for my Wife, My Mother, and My Wife's Mother using sixpence's for luck. I used each ladies mothers birth year of sixpence and gave the necklace's to them on Mothers day as a sentimental good luck charm. People wear coins and tokens for all kinds of different reasons. Even though the penny doesn't mean anything to you the gold must have been nice to find. Its totally up to you to do as you please with it but I think I would keep it just the way it is as a good luck charm..

What crack?? I don't see a crack at all in these pics. If you guys are talking about the split above Lincolns head that is where the bazel splits in order to put the coin in it. It looks gold but could it be tarnished silver?? I would think gold would be marked. Silver too for that matter but I think its more likely that silver wouldn't be marked than gold. I'm pretty sure it is a 1965 penny in that bezel. These bezels are only about $10. at my local coin shop so I would think that it would be real silver at least. I dont know how much the gold ones are though.

Sportinwood sed, "What crack?? I don't see a crack at all in these pics."

You are probably most correct. At first glance it appeared to be a little jagged in the second pic and there was another small blemish close to the inside diameter on the left side of the split. I any case, I believe you are correct. Thank you for the clarification.

^^^

Here's a link you can look at. It appears that yours is missing the screw and the loop that the chain would go through. I think that it probably is gold. The mark may have been on the missing loop. I would also take the penny out and check the inside of the bezel for a mark and while you have the penny out run it across your metal detector that should give you a good idea if its solid or not.

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

wow sportinwood, thanks for the link. It is heavy but I didn't even think about it being worth this much!

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

I found a gold plated zincoln pendant, but no bezel like yours, very neat

Nice find, it looks like Gold, I'm wondering if the crack is from were something was either lost from it, or replaced :dontknow: don't think the Lincoln coin was the original centre piece for this find, but that's just my thoughts :icon_thumleft:

the crack appears to where the bezel opens to get the coin in

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

Maybe I can shed some light here...
I actually just bought what appears to be the exact same bezel yesterday at Goodwill. Mine has a small disc of engraved jade? inside it. If you take a magnifier and look at the top of the loop, you might see a carat mark. Mine is stamped 14K in very very small letters. The "crack" is actually where it opens up and a very small screw goes through that section to hold it closed. Mine is actually slightly too big to fit a penny but it could possibly fit a nickel. I weighed mine at 1.3 grams and using this gold calculator, http://www.silverrecyclers.com/Calculators/gold_calculator.aspx, it should be worth around $37 in scrap. There are a lot of these on ebay that are gold filled so I m hoping for both our sake, that they are solid gold and not just GF.

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

thanks Ben!

Re: Coin in Bezel...gold???

Similar bezeled coins of various dates and denominations are considered 'Love Tokens', and are infrequently sold on ebay. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=love+tokens

Some are engraved with initials and even elaborate designs, and others are undamaged but are enclosed with a bezel...many are holed for stringing...

Apparently, the date was significant to someone...

In my humble opinion, I would leave it intact...

If you are still disappointed, then PM me and I will give you my shipping address :laughing7:
