🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Coin or button?

This is for a friend. He found this in the NC mountains on a old slave farm. It's copper and the size of a half dollar. Anyone seen something similar before? I could be something entirely different than mentioned .

Looks thicker than a button. I think I see marking on it. The hole looks irregular, like it was made by hand. I'm wondering whether it is a British penny-sized coin that was modified into a washer.

A one penny cartwheel is larger.
Irish one penny was 34mm.

Good chance it's a coin.
This might of been a repurposed for a washer or some other purpose.

I talked to him again and he thinks it's a large cent. Can see the bust a little bit in certain light

That’s my guess too. I’ve found a few with nails through them. Not sure if for use as washer or nailed up for good luck, etc

Looks like there is a mark at 12 o'clock on the first pic.
