So I have a great collection of coins from a lot of different places. But my emphasis is on the history of coinage/money for that country. For U.S. coins, of course I have all sorts of Colonials, Mexican/Spanish, some Canadian etc. I also have the French ones I need and Dutch Lion dollars and the like. But I am running out of ideas. Here is what I have included in an "American" set.... Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Philippines, Guam, Marianas (Japanese during the time period)...California gold, Confederate, Texican, Continentals, I even included Liberia which I view as an American "colony". Toss in a few Russian as a nod to Alaska and some Chinese cash coins since they are found everywhere....some British silver/gold of the colonial period..... some Portuguese gold.... and of course some coal script....

So what else can I add?

There are tons of themes you could use to expand your coin collection.
It seems you covered lots of the typical types of collections that one could possibly want to get into concerning coins.
A couple I've noticed out there over the years that were a little bit different included counterstamped coins( that's one of my personal faves), holed coins( yep a whole set and all holed! , a single date ( a birth year or something meaningful with world coins of that year), and out of the ordinary coins (interesting shapes, edges, or features)
I recently started a collection of world bimetalic and trimetallic coins...I like the contrast of metals .
Whatever direction you go you cant go wrong

Add some counterfeit coins and error coinage…, hey, historical display of coins, from beginning to end…!
Think of it as a Timeline of thousands of years…!
“A penny for your thoughts…?”

how droll... don't have the $4, and missing some early gold and a disme or two, but I have what is available.

great ideas, thanks! A holed set would be inexpensive to collect, nice! And a counterfeit set, I never thought of that. One other idea I had was an 1872 set, ( think that's right) which would have the greatest number of different denominations at something like 16 or 17 coins.

I collect Half-dollars. Starting with Franklin's I'm now branching out into Walking Liberty's. A complete set of Walking Liberty's would be a good challenge. Or even more challenging would be a complete set of Barbers. Not certain a complete set of Barber's is possible. It would certainly be interesting to find out.

I'm always looking at the ancient coins when I hit the coin shops, but I've yet to buy any. I'm just concerned if they're real or not.

I’m working on a US gold 14 coin type set, all in PCGS holders with CAC stickers. 11 down, 3 to go.

I have a fellow collector friend who has gone off the deep end as far as I am concerned.... He has collected every year, mintmark and major variety of U.S. coins (not gold yet) back to the Seateds and is deep into Capped-Bust. I believe he is missing 3 coins so far that he says are not available or affordable. Of course "affordable" is a relative term. He also has a full set of Canadian and Maritimes, missing only the 1921 fifty cent. There is an auction for one right now, the bid is up to $120,000. That is a HARD pass for me!

Ancient coins are plentiful and most are not worth faking... however there is a BOOMING market of very well done Chinese fakes, but most of these tend to be historic coins from within the past 200 or so years. A good way to get into ancients is to watch Heritage auctions.... they are 100% reliable and great fun.

Even the years they made the most, the numbers are very low. My 1878 $3 is about the most common date, and yet they only made 80,000 that year. Still reasonably priced because they don’t have a big following. Mostly type collectors like me.

I love that coin, but have you ever held a Mexican 8 escudos in your hand.... think of it like a morgan silver dollar... but gold!
