Colonial Counterfeit

Here are some finds while digging around Savannah, GA from a few weeks ago. My favorite pieces are the gold gilt shoe buckle frame and fancy nipple button. He King George III half pennies are obviously different looking. I suspect that the dateless one is counterfeit? They were dug at the same site on different days.

I'm not an expert but they could both be counterfeit. At one point half the copper coins were counterfeit. Those coins look like they have enough detail that you should be able to compare to pictures of regal examples and determine the authenticity. Look at points on the head and even the shape of the head in relation to the lettering and compare the distances. The Britania figures could give you hints as well. You can also weigh them. If the coin is vastly underweight it's definitely a fake but it's kind of hard to tell because they are worn which would make them weigh less anyway.

I agree. I compared examples from some of the coppers that I have found in the past and the pictures of ones listed on a google search. The dateless one is counterfeit IMO.

I don't think you're hurt if they are counterfeit, perhaps more rare than the real ones, and certainly valuable as a relic.

Most people dont realize that a huge percentage of colonial coppers are counterfeits
I have some where designs are too crude
others design is too good
and others they used poor alloys
but still all good to find them

Yep I agree, I love finding colonial coppers of any kind.

From what I have been told by some of the local guys that detected the site 30 years ago, and found A LOT of stuff that revealed the history of the site- it was a 10 mile tavern and a trading post with huge tanning pools made of brick in the back. Military stuff dating back to the Rev War has been found at this site. I dug a few nice War of 1812 buttons earlier this year.
