Great find! I would need to research it more and someone else here might recognize it right away but that appears to be modeled after a French coin not British. This is what I found quickly-

France 1777-Pau 1/5 ecu

Found a little more - this is talking about Spanish coins/cuff link buttons but probably the French coin cuff link buttons worked along the same idea -

http://www.artifacts.org/patriotic.htm

In addition to their use in peninsular Spain and in that nation's colonies, miniature Spanish coin cuff link buttons were also popular among England's colonists in eastern North America, as attested to by the recovery of these buttons from sites in New England through New York to the English Carolinas and Georgia.

Cuff-links took all shapes & sizes & the ones modelled after coins were quite popular. Some coins were converted to cuffs.
Not too sure on date but circa 1800 seems right to me :icon_thumright:

Bramblefind nailed it, having found a few Spanish ones and seeing quite a few others posted over the years, so without a doubt on the ID. French ones just not as common as the Spanish ones found for obvious reasons....

Thanks again all for your help & experience, I truly appreciate it!

Question for Don, why would the french version not be common?

Simply put, French relics versus Spanish relics, well, not many French relics found at all in the states compared to the numerous Spanish relics.
