Took a chance doing the trip to an old favorite site with the hopes the sites had further washed out of the banks, and turns out I was right. It's not piles, but when you left the place silent and can go back and get this I think it's pretty good. I did dig quite a few more targets but most was just small lead.

FRENCH COLONIAL MARINE BUTTONS, Ca. 1700-1763
The Compagnies franches de la Marine, comprised of infantry under royal naval authority, formed the backbone of France's colonial military establishment in North America. While other French regular and colonial units served in the New World, no other forces served continuously or over such a vast territorial expanse. The classic button pattern worn by these troops from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico until the end of the French colonial period was a convex, rimmed, cast brass type exemplified by the specimens shown above. Until the 1730s, these buttons were made with integrally cast, slab-like shanks with drilled eyes similar to those in use by the Spanish military establishment at the time (upper left/Dauphine Island, Alabama). By the 1740s, the drilled eye form had been replaced by a similar form featuring a cast brass rimmed button body with an inverse staple-like copper or brass wire eye soldered or brazed to the button's back (upper right/Mobile, Alabama and Lake Champlain, New York).

Nice early finds there IP. Good to see you digging and posting. The French colonial buckle is a nice piece of history as are the French Marine buttons. I have been hoping to find one of those here in Southwestern PA from their occupation of Fort Duquesne (1754 - 1758) and their activity trying to thwart the British expeditions against Fort Duquesne.

I should also add these finds are from my ancestors settlement, so kind of wild I find things dating from 1720-1758 that my family lost. Today on the walk out and drive home, we talked about how rough they must have had it... so great gggggg uncle, if you can hear me now I only have two things to say.... thanks for the stuff and better you than me! :laughing7:
From my ancestors settlement OMG.....your French :laughing7:

Yep, in the field but not on the shore. In hind sight we would have gave it a shot that day! It was the day that I damn near had heat stroke... the first field we went to West. At least I thought it was but don't recall us getting there real early because I remember us leaving maybe around noon... and that is the day we left at something crazy like 4am. Do you remember any better than I do?

Any time I'm game! But honeslty I'm really struggling where to go and these are total grind ideas for finds.

Near the RP field? Or was that the day we parked at the side of the road waiting for the sun to come up so we didn't get shot by goose hunters?

Some nice finds IP. Good to see you back out. Looking forward to some more! Hogge

Pretty cool IP,good to see you getting out. Buttons you don't see get posted very often.Really those you just posted are the only other ones I've seen get posted other then the three I've found.Which I guess mine would date a little earlier then the ones you posted if you go by the same site for dating them.I can say this if you hit one of the frying pan buttons like in my hand your detector will be singing a tune, cause it's very thick & heavy for a button.

While pre-1700 styles of Spanish uniform hardware were being relegated to obsolescence at the beginning of the eighteenth century, they were still in at least limited use by Spain's military establishment in Florida and Guale at the time of the English/Yamassee raids during Queen Anne's War. The illustrations that follow provide a cross section of the typologies utilized by the Spanish troops in Florida and its provincial satellites during the ca. 1650-1700 period.

Then I guess you've missed the previous 100 I've posted over the years. :tongue3: My best day I dug 18 along side my French cannonball.

Don't expect to see any Spanish ones here but you never know.

No far West, and then we back tracked to the RP field where I almost dropped.

No dude didn't get to see them, don't know what I was up to.May not just noticed them.I usually keep my eye out for your post cause of the type stuff you find interest me.I'm sure you have though.I'm guessing those type your talking of are the thick shank type as you posted. They are a type I've not seen here. And the three I found above all came from one site. And have never came across a site that has given up those type for me again yet.If I can't get my blowed out disc in my back straight might not find none for awhile.:unhappysmiley:

To be honest I probably haven't posted many as the majority were found before I joined here. I do like finding them but at this point I'm looking for the big one, and some different stuff along the way. All the usual stuff is just enough to keep me motivated to dig.

Hey looks like a decent hunt to me...Is that the site where we walked around for hour and hours in the pouring rain? Your sunray pointer was acting up too.. That day will run in my mind forever, I poured water out of my boots...
I love finding those buttons and only have 4 to my name and one with cothing still attached...

No, but we there your last trip. We hunted the field and and you got a couple of targets and don't think I got anything. I probably told you it was where I dug the French countermarked Douzain.

I know the field your talking about, the farmer was planting further up...lots of potential there....

Not sure you go it yet... it was the field we went to before we hunted the one they were planting. (walking distance) We only stayed at the first place maybe 20 minutes. Anyway, it was the shore in front of that first field.

Nope I get it... My memory is crisp...there was a farmer in the distance planting (out of site) and that site had a British site to the left of the field the french to the right...I pulled a couple of crusty coppers out... Didn't you have french Dave there?
However the field that you are referring about would be worth another walk plus that overgrown field attached to that on would have some good potential...

yep, you got it. The sites are definitely washing out. If it was my land I'd help them along! :)

Did you have an observer this time around? or did they participate?

Just me, but next time I will have to battle an Ace 250! :laughing7: I'm not concerned about the detector or skills, really lack there of, but what scares the hell out of me is beginners luck!
