Hmmm, I'm not positive on this one but I think it is a rectangle. It could also be a square, a triangle, a trapezoid, a rhombus, or a fire nugget.

Well yes it is a rectangle -.- but if you look closely it has a part of a hinge, as to a buckle...

After looking closer I agree that it is a rectangle. However, do the angles measure a total of 360 degrees or are they less/more. This could help in determining age and type of metal. You can use a common kids protractor to determine this..

I would guess it isn't older than 1800's

As a fellow Amateur detector I would recommend you start pouring acid on everything. It will assist in identification but decrease value of finds.

Don't use acid on the face of something that may have collector value.

The "bumps" to keep the tongue in place makes it late 1800's or even 1900's.
