Went hunting for a while in what I've come to call "the button field" for all the flat buttons I've found in this
small section of the woods, when I came across this small charm. I took a pic of each side with a dime for comparison, and then a pic of it after a little electrolysis. It appears to be bronze but I'm not certain.
Based on the motif and the design I believe it's a colonial era piece but am not sure, so I welcome comments from anyone with knowledge about early jewelry or jewelry in general. Thanks for looking.

Nice early piece! Maybe it was a watch winder (with the tip on the bottom broken off?)

I'm thinking you might have an ornate watch winder piece there, perhaps late 18th or early 19th century (1790's -1820's) Cool Find .
( that is hysterical ! When I first started typing nobody had responded yet, and I submit my post and 3 of us all guessed watchwinder !)

We all agree watch winder, I think 19th C.

True, it's the shape of the loop at the top that was the biggest give-a-way.

So it's a watch-winder? I never would have guessed, cause I've never seen one before. I looked at the base and it does look like a small tubular piece may have been there and broken off, but if so it would have been a pretty clean break, because all you see is a narrow annulus at the bottom of the base.

Its normally a thin tube of iron/steel that fixed in that hole in the base, so no break of the copper-alloy would be visible. But normally a bit of iron residue, if it was complete in the ground.
