This past Sunday I was out covering a small area of log cabin site built before 1775 when I got a good signal at only 5 inches deep turned out to be 11 big flat buttons in the same hole. Wow can't believe my eyes, 11 buttons in the same hole!! Glhh

I think the reason that all the buttons ended up in the same hole was maybe the clothing was made out of wool and when moths started eating the wool they threw the old clothes outside, the rest of the clothes decayed and the buttons were the only thing left. It doesn't make sense that they were in a fire, because the buttons are in such great shape. Any thoughts??

I agree with you that they were not fire damaged. Maybe it was a little old colonial grandmother's stash? I can remember my grandma having a mason jar filled with buttons she had clipped and saved. I bet frugal women have practiced this for generations.
Super nice find. I would have loved to have found any of those.

Agreed! I'm guessing the coat finally fell apart & they pulled the buttons & placed in a bag to reuse...........new ones cost money many Colonist's didn't have!

So some old Colonial guy dropped some coats there and over the centuries they disintegrated and were buried by time, 250 years later you dug up what was left - the metal buttons. Good theory? Great find anyway!
