I was surprised to see this come out of the ground. Says Waterbury button Co. on the back. The Midland was the first standard gauge railroad built over the continental divide in Colorado! 1883-1918. Thrilled to find it. I think the ring is gold plated but I hope it is solid. I’m glad it is not copper! I hope you are all out digging. To nice of weather here! 81CE43C6-39AF-4DBB-B989-784B66E6AFCB.jpeg 13DCF83F-622D-4733-9F7B-A364B44082C5.jpeg 0BC89D11-B765-403B-AF5F-D2231D213A62.jpeg

Nice railroad button. The ring is likely gold plated brass.

Thanks for the posts! I agree about the ring Steve, it seems lightweight. I assume if they went through the trouble of making a gold ring back then they would have stamped it! Thanks Tom, it does have nice detail!

Nice button and the ring, hit it with some polish. Can't see any plating in your pic. (fingers crossed it's gold) Grats!

It's high 70's down here today with a lot of wind.

Thanks thrifty! Thanks xr7ater, I polished it but I am suspicious it feels light. I’ll bring it to a jeweler if I get the chance!

Thanks Hawk, I bet it would be fun to hunt below the Niagra falls! That would be something if it ever dried up! Here is another picture of the ring. BF123B12-9188-43D0-8F59-2915D189514A.jpeg

Thanks for the posts! I was unaware of these types of buttons, now I am hoping the other two railroads that came through my town had similar buttons!!!

Congrats on your ring ! , I got one last year but it was brass/copper ,might have been plated ?

OK ! now that we got the ring out of the way,,,,, on to a much more important item,,, your button !! Congrats !!!!!! what a great local find !!:headbang: My knowledge is limited , Was it used on the Midland terminal ? ,which ran from divide to the district or was it only used on the Colorado Midland ??? I know there are locks that say Colorado midland and locks that say Midland Terminal , if you find out please let me know. I've included a pic to answer half of your question , the brother pulled this cuff button out of a pit in 1997-98 and handed it to me and asked if it had writing 8-) Can't wait to get up for a hunt !!

We have a Midland Railway but the buttons are completely different & yours being a US back-mark, is what gives it away.

Nice!
