Today I was looking through my metal detecting find bin and came across this. I remembered finding it at a 200+ year old cellar hole site about a quarter mile away from the cellar hole. It's iron but rang with iron discriminated. Today I found it in my find bin and noticed small "S" then a "W". These letters were exactly where they should be on a compass. The corrosion is making it impossible to see if there are other letters. Another thing is that the hole is off center (can not see in pictures). Anyway is it a piece of a compass, if so how old, If not what is it?

P.S. Picture of pencil eraser through hole of artifact with rolled paper towel paper towel piece is my guess of how it would work if it is a compass.
