Complete Jefferson nickel set from circulation - Goal reached!

I made up my mind about a year ago I was going to find a complete set of Jefferson nickels from circulation. As you probably already guessed, it came down to the 50D. So today I took all the odd stuff I've found in the last year, the foreign, states punched cents, elongated cents, stuff like that to my LCS. There were roughly 250-300 coins (no silver in the foreign, I checked those). He offered me $10.25. He had three 50D nickels, 2 of them uncirculated and priced at $15. He ended up trading me the nickel for the Euros, pesos, mutilated cents, etc. Since they were all from circulation, to my way of thinking in reached my goal!

I had my collection completed by the end of last summer with the exception of that one date. I refuse to purchase or trade for it though. I am determined to find it.

That's awesome that you found three 50D's in circulation! I'm sure your 38S will come along. I found 8 of them. My next toughest after the 50D was the 39D - only 2 found.

Congratulations! Your set is found mainly from circulation if you want to get technical, but you sure worked hard for it !
I recently finished my Jefferson nickel Set from circulation last week. It took me 4 years to accomplish it. Except the coin I needed was the 1944 d. I've found several of the 1938 d, 1938 s, 1939 d, and 1939 s nickels and 2 1950 d before I found that 1944 d.

Congrats on reaching your goal! Those semi-key date Jeff's are very hard for me to find - esp the '38D, '38S & '39D. I've found 4 or 5 '50D's and a couple of '39S's in the past but I still don't think I've found all those semi-key dates yet.

Sincere congrats. I am a very long ways from completing such a set myself but would eventually like to. Though if experience to date is any indication it will happen long before

One thing I have been doing with the various denominatons is to accept 'placeholders' for the time being, and then to upgrade them whenever the chance arises. Some of my Kennedys have been replaced 2-3 times each, but they were all 'wild caught.' And each time they are upgraded the condition improves.

Congrats, that is an achievement, more difficult to do than the value of the completed set would indicate. I have not found a 50D or 39D in circulation. I wonder how much influence your location has on what are the most difficult of the key dates to find?

Congrats on the complete set! I'm really surprised how many of you here have completed the Jeff set (and some of you multiple sets). It's really tough. I am 2 coins away - missing the '38S and a '45D. I used to search a lot of nickels in the late 80s and found lots of war nicks back then, but even back then I couldn't complete it. The first time around, I found all but the '39D & '50D.

I thought I was getting close but I wrote down all the nicks I'm still missing and it's a long list. Got the 50D though.

I started a book a few years ago. I just got the 1943 D 2 weeks ago, and now all I need is the 50 d.

I've found many several 38 D's (including an AU piece), 4 38 S's, 1 39 D, 1 39 S, 3-4 1942 D's, 1 1943 D, several 1944 D's, couple 1949 S's (tough date), 2-3 1951 S's, and like 10 1955's in years of CRHing.
