Complete Model 1859 Spur!

Greetings,

I am posting/asking for a friend as he is not a TNET member.

We just recently received permission at 1798 homestead a few miles from Antietam that saw plenty of troop movement during Antietam and the retreat from Gettysburg. The owner has been living there for 50 years, and according to him, there has only been one other guy digging on the property, and he was only there for a day or two.

I managed to pull a knapsack hook, while my buddy got an intact spur in our first hour there!!! My friend was able to ID it pretty quickly as a model 1859 union enlisted man's spur.

Question: What would be the best way to preserve the iron rowel? Would you seal the whole spur or just the rowel? What would you use to seal? ETC
