Yesterday my digging partner found this coin. The site produced another KG copper and some colonial items. From my research it looks to be a Conn. Copper, the date is 1787. From the closest example of a Conn. Copper this one has some minor differences, for example the distance between the chin and the shoulder seems shorter, maybe not? I also came across this bust version referred to as a "horn" style. Any input on this coin is appreciated. Thanks!!!

Not knowing a lot about earlier US coins, I'd have to say it looks like your on the right track with the research you've done. Looks like a pretty exciting find.

Being from Canada, I'm not an expert on US coins, more so on British & Canadian. :laughing7:

But looking at your side-by-side comparison pics, your coin looks to be in better shape then the online example you're comparing it with.

Nice find,
Dave

Your coin is a Connecticut copper but not the one in your comparison. The reverse of your coin has the letters LIB to the right of the seated figure but the other one has ET LIB. There are also differences with the portrait on the obverse side. Regardless, a great find for sure.

Good catch on the Et Lib, i overlooked that detail. I never realized there were so many variants.

Thanks, so far the Miller 14H looks pretty close, by the way this coin was found in West Virginia so its a little ways from home.

There are I believe 241 varieties of 1787 alone. Yours is the 14-H variety that nhbenz pictured. Some can be very tricky to attribute, but you got lucky with an easy one, it is the only variety with the "pheons" each side of the date.
