Considering hunting dimes, worried about miscounts

I've had decent finds with halves in the past, but it is starting to slow down. I want to switch it up and try dimes.

I was just wondering, do you guys have problems with the bank miscounting dimes? I would be turning in my coins in a Coin-Lok bag that is subject to verification.

I typically exchange for cash on the spot, but I don't want the bank coming back and debiting my acct because the machine counted em as pennies. Am I worried for nothing?

Should I try another denomination instead like nickels or pennies?

Miscounts are common with dimes. The worst, I think was I got a box that was missing 18. Sometimes you get extra too. The most I got extra was like 7. I can't stand British 5 Pences. You'll see a bunch of them.

Why do you want to dump perfectly good rolls that can be given to merchants? Seems like a big waste to me. That's where I think CRHing can be wasteful. Halves on the other hand are not the same since those are pretty much ordered for searching. Merchants do not order them. By ordering and dumping a bunch of dimes into zip bags is kind of a waste to me. The averages are around a little over one per $500 anyhow.

Just ask your bank to do a swap for a new box. They can use your searched box and you get another one. Keeping dumps from getting in the stream as well. Find ones that have a lot of merchants, those go through a lot more boxes than some others. You can have a week rotation of them. I will usually stop by branches if I'm passing through or in the area.

i love to do dimes, but i only do cwr, in the past i would do 2 boxes at a time and would only find 1-2 silvers every other box, now i can pull 3-4 dimes out of 300 bucks nearly every time, and last week i got one roll with 22 silvers. but i only crh once a week, and have been only skunked 5 times in the last year.

I don't recall ever having a problem with my cash on the spot transactions in four years.
I've also had dimes counted as cents many times when using the counter. Not a problem, as my receipt from the counter shows exactly what's counted and the bank deposits the shorted amount into my account.

Miscounts of dimes as pennies can indeed be a problem, especially when you have bank staff who claim that "the machines don't make mistakes" or (my favorite) "no one else has complained". I mainly stick to two coin counters that I know are accurate in my area. If they drift out of calibration and start doing the penny polka, I'll probably need to roll by hand.

Worst I have ever been shorted was 1 roll. Best I have been granted was an extra roll.

As for percentage of silver per box. I am averaging about 1 dime per 45 rolls.

I once had a machine wrapped sealed, crimped dime roll missing 16 dimes in it. I did not make a fuss out of this because the box produced a silver roosie.

I was also shorted $206.70 on 1 BOX of dimes, most of the dimes counted as pennies in the coin counter.

Nothing wrong with boxes of dimes. I don't do CWR because it's time consuming. I don't want to go through that many that I have open manually. Although I'm sure the chances of finding more are better but it takes more time and you get shorted more often. This for me, I prefer plastic over paper. You'd be surprised occasionally there are boxes with a bunch of them every so often too.

I think by using the coin-loks you will be just fine. Some coin counters do indeed count some dimes as cents. However, you will be dealing with the coin courier's count - not the bank's possibly faulty machine. My dump bank uses Loomis, and I have been told by the branch manager that Loomis weighs the bags instead of counting the coins individually. If that is the case for the courier that your dump bank uses, as long as you're accurate in placing the correct amount of dimes into the bag, the weight should be spot on. Even if your courier counts the coins, I would suspect that their counting machines are both more accurate than the average machine in the lobby of a bank, and more regularly maintained and checked for accuracy than the average coin machine in a bank.

My advice would be to try 1-2 bags as a "test" and see what happens. Good luck!

Thanks, this is the response I was looking for. I may have to find a new pick up bank as I don't want to create trouble on an already strained bank.

I am considering dimes as well, the coin counters in my area seem to be accurate for the small sums I have ran through them (<$100). Also the upside of dumping is the machines have 2-3 bags allocated for the dimes, so I would not cause too much inconvenience for tellers to come replace bags, and may often go through the process unnoticed. I might just try getting any random rolls they have on hand before I go into ordering boxes, just to see what kind of success I can have.

I have enough trouble getting keepers with halves.. don't want that to happen to dimes as well. Doing the swap with clear plastic wrap dimes is the best way to keep the stream clear of dumps. If you live in a big area with banks around every block, that should not be a problem. If they use your rolls for merchants, there wouldn't be a problem with miscounts since they won't be sending them in. As mentioned many times before, I always weigh the rolls to be accurate. If short, I add. If extra, I pull. When I turn them in, they will not be getting any more or less.

Silversharpie, how many dime boxes ($500) are you planning to do a week?

I just finished searching a String and Sons style box of dimes ($250) and my eyes and back hurt lol. I've been spoiled with halves, the keepers basically jump out and hit you in the face. Not so with dimes. Took me about 40 minutes to go through the box; I can go through a box of halves in less than 15 mins. Too bad my bank doesn't offer the Brinks style clear rolls.

I found two keepers - a pair of 1964 Roosies, so it wasn't a total wash.

I may do 1 box of dimes or so a week, and keep up the 20 box regimen of half dollars per week as long as I (and the banks) can bear.

Cant you just edge search the dimes? I havent done too many, but the few silver I found really jump out at you. There is no issue with a 40% that barely has a silver edge that you can miss in a bad lighting.

I used to look at each individual tiny dime, trying to find proofs or the 1982 no p, but that takes way too long. Now I just rim search and if I see something that's dirty or doesn't look right I'll pull that one for closer inspection.

On some of the 40% halves I've pulled I could see the copper on the side, but since dimes were either 90% or clad you don't have to worry about that.
