I don't really know where to start,
as when I found my gold Ducat, it began with a premonition, just last night,
I had mentioned to my girlfriend that some of the early Colonial coins had the slogan
'Mind Your Business' attributed to my favorite Founding Father: Benjamin Franklin.
Had a -1.36 low tide this morning, so I was in the mud at dawn, made a few nice finds and finished up at 8 am. With my work schedule, I had a couple more hours to spare, so I thought about doing some hunting elsewhere.
Without ANY hope for significant finds, I headed to an inland tidal river, & started swinging, in a few seconds, I get a shallow 36 hit, turn over some mud, & pluck out a large coin, give it a rinse, & see what I thought was a chain around the edge,
dropped my detector & shovel and head back to my truck.
A closer look reveals that it is not a chain cent.
I have a good idea what it is, as I have a full set of colonial reproductions.
What to do ? of course look for more!
Found a few more interesting items, that any other day would be posted here & now.
Today is no ordinary day.
Rubbings show good date, am storing in distilled water until I can find info on having it professionally cleaned. tips welcome! more info:

the top 2 pix are for comparison of course, bottom 6 are my find.
Thanks for looking, & Great Digs to You All, Herbie.
A Huge thanks to Mike, (4-H) for confirming field ID, and calming me down a bit!

WooooHoooo~ :hello2:

So there it is.

That's a sweet one buddy for sure~!
Your in the right area for this to be 100 percent authentic brother. :hello2:

This is a very historical and prominent find Herbie.
You outdid yourself this time.
I have to agree, one of the best I have seen yet dug.
You say I calmed you down? when I saw what you might have had there, I got a little exited too! :D

Congratulations on another well deserved banner.

BANNER UP

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Awesome digs. You found my "Holy Grail" find. :P

If it turns out to be the real deal, you've got my banner vote. Heck, I'll vote anyways.

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Looks possible to me, but based on other criteria. While CCs known from silver, pewter and brass, other metal contents are/were possible, including copper.

My criteria include the not exactly round shape: original CCs were often misshapen, as were early cents and half cents. Original blanks struck from shipping package straps for wooden crates. Could have straight edges on some coins, or the nearly flattened sides indicated here. CC copies were usually more round.

In either case, even if it proves to be a copy, still banner quality IMO, and a terrific find! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Have you had this coin checked out Herbie? Any new info on it?

Maybe it's a new variety and he is on vacation.

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Very nice dig, congrat's. :icon_thumright:

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

don't think vacations coming up for me ::)
Have sent pix of coin to 2 Colonial experts.
Got 1 reply that only a hands on examination can determine authenticity.
Any advice on where to go from here would be appreciated.

Geez Herbie I wouldnt have a clue of who you could take it too, other then sending it off to PCGS or another coin grading company. :read2: Good luck. Keep me posted if you find out anything. :icon_thumleft:

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Thanks Mainer,
Will look into sending it off,
not knowing is killing me , and Tuberales post makes sense.
Replicas were made to look perfect , so the flat edge is significant.
although it could have gotten flat in other ways. Whoo, deep breath.....
A bit leery of sending it off in a package, and having a different coin come back with a replica report.
keep on that Silver Trail!

HEEHEE, Wish!
I donated a few finds to a small local museum yesterday,
after conversation with the proprieters (lack of better word) about metal detectorists, and my motives and methods. I may soon be able to hunt a site where military post has been maintained since early 1600's previously off limits to us.
finds will go to museum. HH, Herbie.

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Hope they stay in the museum, and don't end up being sold, Will. Apparently lots of artifacts being sold by museums now.

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Wow great find! My 2 cents on age is I have dug a lot of pewter items that are 150 years old and they are all in a much less corroded condition than your find if it was 1870s it would be in better shape IMHO.

Re: Continental Currency Dollar... new pix bottom ....

Greetings, Thanks for all your Input, help, and Congrats.
I recieved an email from a Colonial 'Expert', stating coin is a repro.
single sentence.
I still plan to present in person to some acredited source.
Good Day, & Great Digs to you all! Herbie.

I think that is the best way to go on this item.

Hi Herbie i don't see how any expert can determine it legality by looking at a photo of a coin in that condition , did this expert say it,s a flat out fake or a 1876 100 year copy ? 4 metals were used to make those silver copper pewter and even brass test pattern,s , yes your best bet is take it a expert . Good luck Dd60

If an expert says repro. he means modern.
