I see some letters stamped around the bottom. Can you make them out?

It looks like the cap to an air valve on a pneumatic tyre (tire).
Plenty have been found by other TNet members.

Valve cover as noted, perhaps not for a tire but some other type of shrader type valve.

(That blood-blister under your nail brings back memories of pinched fingers and teeny-tiny drill bits to relieve the pressure  )

Sorry, I'll retract the "tyre/tire valve" connection ;D
That was my understanding from what I had read on TNet previously :sign13:

Don't be too anxious to discount the valve cover idea. That knurled area around the piece is the grip area for turning the cap on and off of another object. Why not a valve of some kind? The valves for relieving fuel pressure on our fuel injected engines in our cars, trucks, etc. are called "shrader valves"; as one example. That cover MIGHT be for a larger valve on a larger engine such as a industrial sized power plants. :dontknow:

I believe you are correct. Its old style Model T perhaps. Schrader valve cover from a tire. Yes, plenty have been found and posted.

Apparently the old Model T Ford valve stems covers were much larger. I believe it is indeed from a tire.

I looked a bit online and couldnt find a pic because replacement tubes do not have large valve stems but it appears that the old original tire tubes did because there are many types and they are all large. :)

This is without any doubt an old tire valve stem dust cover. It should be threaded inside.
