No, not a coin. Whilst digging today I had a large hit. Showed up as good metal. So, I thought I'd dig up the beer can and at least serve some purpose. What came out was a short little pipe looking thing. It was about 18in. long and had the words COPPERWELD 8 engraved. Seems it turned out to be an electrical Ground rod. It's about a half an in. thick. My question is, are these things pure, solid copper? With copper prices today, maybe I did better than I thought. :)

I dont know where your at but in pa coppers up. I dont know exactly how much but my boyfriends a scrapper and hes always talking about needing to find some copper :)

Someone told me that new ground rods could be possibly just copper plated. I found an old one once, tried to dig it out with a shovel and got down about 5 feet and still could not pry it out with shovel. The farmer used a four wheel drive ATV and a chain to pull the arrestor rod out of the ground. It was longer than a full sized pickup truck bed with the gate folded down and a inch diameter to boot. Interesting

I know that ground rods like this are supposed to be buried up to 6-9 feet in the ground. The piece I have looked like a cut off piece. Like it was thrown away. It was definitely older. Had a green patina like pennies get.

Did yours turn out to be pure copper?

Then I didn't do so bad!

I usually find a few pennies. This thing, if it's pure copper, is worth at least 300 of them!

Thanks!

HH

Saw the shovel scratches after the farmer pulled the rod out. Nothing but copper color in them. It was a very old site, a grounding rod that old would never be just plate.

LOVE Copper and brass scrap!
These finds have paid for my equipment a couple times over,

I average $100 per month in pipe, fittings, sheet, and junk,
here's a good days haul
