Hello All,

I got out for a few hours today in the blazing Texas heat. I hunted a lot where a late 1800s house once sat. I turned up a few wheat pennies, toy cars and some other junk but my find of the day was a pocket watch casing and HUGE lock that reads "S.B & CO.".

The pocket watch casing came out of the ground completely encrusted with no sign of shimmer. When I got it home and cleaned it I was very surprised to see it shine like gold. Could it possibly be gold since it didn't come directly out of the ground shining? Also, is there any way to find any info on the piece with the numbers that are present on the edge?

Googling S.B & CO. didn't give me much info. Have any of you seen this type of lock before or do you know anything about this company.

Thanks for looking!

Man.hate to tell ya but don't think it's gold. From what I can see that's only my opinion but take it for what it's worth. It just looks to crusty tome where e black is starting to show. Neat finds though. Love the lock.

I didn't figure it was since it came out of the ground so crusty. What do you think it is made of since its not gold? Any way to date it with the numbers printed on the rim?

If the black we see in your picture is coming only from INSIDE your watch case, it may be gold-plated at best. But if the black is instead only on the SURFACE of the watch case, it may be gold and maybe solid gold at that. Both of the two solid gold rings I've dug were almost totally covered with nasty crust! My heavy 14k gold ring was mostly covered with a thin skin of rust-colored iron due to being under beach for years near large old deteriorating iron objects. The iron skin popped easily off my gold ring just by using my fingernail. On the other hand, the black crud that nearly enveloped my 18k gold ring which was dug in dirt was much harder to remove, had to use baking soda soaking and scrubbing, followed by scrubbing with plastic scrubber. Let us know what you find out! HAVE FUN! Andi

Chances are gold plated... but.. I should have mentioned to always test it with a gold kit or take it to a place where they can do it for you.

Believe the lock is a Slaymaker-Barry Co. I looked into it earlier this summer after finding one with that same diamond logo :cat:
