These past few days have been amazing as two friends and I have gone on a several day dig. (All finds will be posted in the near future). Today was the last day and we decided to return to some 18th century cellar holes we located last year. I managed a few buttons, and a knee buckle. My friends got a few coins. I had not found a coin while at the site since last year. As we were walking down an old path, getting ready to go through the deep woods to get to the car I got a solid coin signal. To me it sounded like a copper while my friend thought it may be silver. He dug the hole about a foot down and then I got in there with the pin pointer. I scooped out some dirt and a stone and that’s when I saw a large round object with a missing piece. I gave it a quick wipe and saw the face of Carlos III and we all started cheering and yelling. We thought it was a big silver, which it sort of was... it wasn’t high enough on my machine and sure enough I saw there was a copper core but with a fairly substantial silver layer. An awesome way to end our adventure! 65EDBCAA-C2C1-4BF5-8C8B-26CD70C9D25E.webp 4CB9512A-A57C-449B-AE18-C0AF21E97969.webp B0F4232B-9969-4914-9659-77CE99D24AEE.webp

Very interesting coin find! :occasion14:

I think it is more rare to find a counterfeit 8-Reale! :dontknow:

I love counterfeit coins. I have a period 1875 Seated Dime I found made of Antimony. Congratulations

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

That's a very cool find,congratulations!

That thing sure has a lot of detail and not much porosity for a fake. Gary

Cool find counterfeit makes for a good find and relic can't wait to see more great post

That "coin" is gigantic! Congrats on a really cool piece. I would love to find one of those. Looks somebody was pretty skillful at counterfeiting! I always read about them having the death penalty for silver counterfeiters... but I wonder what was the penalty for possessing it or passing it if you happened to come into possession of one of these?

Nice old coin find. Congrats

Very cool recovery, nice looking counterfeit, congrats

Counterfeit or not, that is a really cool find. Great stuff!

Wow!! Now that'll get the blood pumping to see that one in the hole. A very nice find. Congrats!

Something interesting... I have showed this coin to some folks I know real well at a coin store, and another friend of mine who really knows Spanish coins and they both actually think it may be real. Apparently sometimes the silver can oxidize green? It was a struck coin, not cast. Seems like it would have been way too complicated to counterfeit something like it... Very strange all around.

Be careful about relying solely on VDI for Metal I.d., unless the numbers are extreme. That coin looks real.

Or reale. hahahahahahahaha

I have never held one in my hands but it does look real

Beautiful coin! Just a stunning piece of history right there. Well done.
