Very excited tonight, dug my first countermarked coin!

when I first got a look at it I wasn't even sure I had a coin. It felt a bit light and looked wrong, not completly round.

When I got home I could make out a star on one side and new it was a large cent. Cool.

Dropped it in some peroxide to get a date, obverse side up first (the reverse was the really caked on side)

Saw how ugly it was and thought it must have gotten tangled with too many plow blades

But when I got around to cleaning the back I noticed the strong counterstamp and let out a big yeeeha. (the kids think I'm nuts :tongue3: )

I believe it says P CHAPIN but not sure about the P.

1805 large cent with the "P. CHAPIN" counterstamp -- (12/10/2011)... (I don't have an account so I'm not sure what this one went for, it may even look a little bit different)

Thanks for looking and HH.

That's a great surprise. Now the fun part is finding out about Chapin.

Cool! I found one a couple years ago counter-stamped R A M ..... the stamped coins are great!

Great find! Still looking for mine!

awesome. I think those are a lot neater than the real ones! great work.

Nice copper Find! His stamp may have been changed over the span of years,
I would imagine it's the same merchant. Congrats !!

Good "un Bob!!! I'm sure a first for you is a rare recovery in VA. Congrats, Quindy.

That's a pretty cool find !
