I recently retried the Craiglist posting for older homes and got a response from a lady in Gary In. I am working in NWI and am staying in my travel trailer and this house was literally around the corner from where I am staying. I met up with her Thursday and she asked me to come by today. The history of the house goes back to the 30s. It was inherited by her from her Grandfather and he himself was something else. Started detecting around 7:15 and knew that it was gonna be a hard day. The yard was FULL of trash. I dinged around for about an hour and got a good signal. Out pops a Gary Fire Department button in really good shape. I showed her and she was surprised. I ding around some more and out pops another then another then another. Then an old US Steel button shows itself. I am thinking I guess its gonna be a button kind of day but that was last of the buttons. She told me that an owner previous to her grandfather had worked there and had fallen to his death at the mill. That was a somber moment, let me tell ya. I continued to hunt and found an old BAN deoderant can, some clad and lots of junk fittings and plate. My poor ace was just as tired as I was when we finished up. I cleaned up the pile of junk and split my finds with her. She invited me back to continue the hunt and of course I accepted. I think that I will use the sniper coil next time in the high trash areas and see if I can pull some good stuff out. Thanks for reading. TMAN...

Can you post the Craigslist posting?

Thanks,

joe

Congrats TMan.
I remember when Gary, Ind. used to have orange skies from all that steel mill pollution.
Congrats on all the buttons.

P.S. Gary is Michael Jackson's hometown. ;)

Joe Coin, this is the post I use on Craigslist.

Have you ever wondered what may lay beneath your yard? Do you have an old home that is 50 years or older? Have you ever lost anything of value to you and were unable to find it? Then I may have the solution. I metal detect as a hobby and have been for many years. I have found all kinds of things from relics to rings to coins. If you have a piece of property that you would like to have searched then email me. I will be happy to split anything I find and I will leave your yard in good order and take all the trash that I uncover. Email me and we can discuss it. Thanks.

Congrats tman

Those are somce pretty cool finds. When I was a kid I used to live between LaPorte and Michigan City from 1973 to 1979. The subdivision I lived in was on the Summit which is the highest point in Indiana. I remember seeing the red skies of Gary at night. On a clear day, I could see the Chicago Skyline also and it was over an hours' drive away!!!

One of these days I'm gonna have to head down there and do some detecting in the LaPorte area. I live about a 3 hour drive from there up in Michigan.

Congrats on the cool finds!!

You must have lived on Johnson Rd. by the prison farm, right? I lived back there in LP then too.
A lot of great old hunting spots in LP as you know.

Yes, I lived in Jongkind Park off of Johnson Rd. just past the prison farm if you were heading towards M.C. My dad worked for Howmet from '73 to '79 down there. I went to Crichfield Elementary and Boston Jr High and was a member of Cub Scout Pack #289. I have relatives around LaPorte still. Well.....more like step-relatives since they're my stepmom's family (Plank, Euler, Raska). We left the area in '79 when my dad transferred back to Michigan (He worked at the Howmet plant on the end of Lincolnway. I haven't been back there much since, but I plan on trying my luck down there someday soon. I remember a lot of places around there from when I was a kid.

Hey Sarge, when ever you get ready to come down, let me know. I am always looking for a place to hunt. I am about an hour or so from there. TMAN...
