I had some crh finds that I wanted to sell. I wanted to get a silver 1 oz bar and I needed 20$ more. I went to a silver buying place and brought 1 1957 quarter and 2 1964 halves. They said they can buy the quarter but not the halves. (I called ahead and they said they would buy silver halves). And they had a 10$ minimum so they said the quarter is too small.
I thought they meant the quarter was $5 and I need at least 2. So I went home (I rode my bike there) and got 4 silver quarters. I called and they offered me $6 for the 4 silver quarters!!!!!!!!!! That was it! My mom told me when she sold her silver she didn't even get half of spot. I didn't really believe her since I heard APMEX buys for 93-94% of spot. I ended up not selling it of course. So I have 2 questions.

1) Is this a normal price when selling silver?

2)What can an 11 year old do to earn money? (No snow here, Lives in an apartment so no lawns)

I really want a silver 1 oz bar! I would do almost anything! Thanks for reading!

Crazy, in my opinion. You should be getting 85% of spot at least. The whole thing sounds fishy. Why would they not buy the 90% halves?

Go back and tell them that you know they are trying to screw you and that you want a real offer!

Those types of gold and silver buying shops usually are a scam. Always pay less than 80% spot.

I know people have there own likes, but give me silver quarters anyday over 1oz bars and rounds. Especially ones found by yourself.

Pick up cans on the street if there are any (my area has a very little amount of cans).

Hey kid, You can get a paper route, delivering papers to just your apts. or maybe just your neighborhood. I'm guessing the Houston paper. People pay in advance now so there should be no collecting and you should make $1.50-$2.00 or more a paper a month. Just an idea. You might also go by one of the local mom and pop stores in your area and see if they'll hire you to sweep out, clean up or deliver. Or try at school. Check with a counselor or VP and ask about part-time work there. Don't deliver circulars or go door to door. Stranger danger! You can also do what some of my students did. Sell stuff at school like candy or cupcakes. I used to let them sell at the start of class and you must have at least one teacher who would do that. Had a guy whose dad had died and he and mom got up every morning and made tacos. He sold them during first period(football) and what was left sold in my second period science class. Thats how they survived, but the problem was that I gained nearly 100 lbs. in a year between the tacos and the candy sales.(You buy the candy cheap and sell it for a buck a bar). Just an idea, good luck.

Their offer is normal if you went to a cash4gold type place, but for a coin shop that offer is just offensive.
If you have any problem getting 95% of spot then ask your parents if you can make an ebay auction. Oddly enough, you can sometimes get more than spot on ebay because people get caught in bidding wars.

When I was your age, I made decent money fur-trapping.

Pet and house sit!!!!! Its what i do, and iI make a killing!!!!! Put a poster up in the office of your apartment (with permission). Just cater toward people in your apartment, and eventually, if you do a good job, word will spread, and people all around will want to hire you!!! This will only work if you give them a bill though. Otherwise you will have old ladies giving you a nickel. When i first started i charged $8 a day, and eventually moved it up to $10.

I'm thinking this is not an option for him. You probably didn't live in an apartment. I think Sagittarius had a good idea with bottles and cans. Also have to second the comment about not trading crh finds to get a silver bar. Maybe Santa could get you a silver bar. They aren't that expensive for one ounce. HH

Why not? I grew up in a suburban subdivision. Maybe he has a relative near that could help with transportation. Just sayin, where there's a will, there's a way.

when I was in my teens, I picked strawberries in the field, worked at housekeeping at the local hotels with my mom, bussed tables for 2 weeks, etc. If the job is just for 1 day or 2 weeks, that's money in your pocket for CRHing.

also that silver prices sounds exactly like my LCS, which is why I don't sell my silver at all. I am keeping all my 40% and canadian silver. I might one day sell it on ebay if they change their fees and I don't have to go through FEEpal. Right now I only have 2 LCSs, 4 pawn shops and absolutely no local coinshows which makes me weep. I haven't been to a coin show in 20 years. But keep an upper lip and eyes open. something will pop up that will give you enough money for the silver.

Hugs and Smiles,
Garoulady

Thanks everyone! The cans sounds good but I don't know if Texas gives money for cans. I'll Google it though. I'll try EVERYONE'S ideas!

What... no cats?

Well I got an idea on how I could earn money. I just finished vaccuming my house and my dad said he'll give me $5. Maybe I can put up a poster or something offering to vaccum houses for 2 or 3 bucks.

I'd charge at least $5. And note that they have to supply the vacuum.

Scrapyards will pay for junk aluminum cans.

Go to all of your local banks and tell them you will search through all of their coins and replace the old ones with newer and shinier ones for a nominal fee.
