I thought it looked like some sort of coral but we are far from an ocean. Thanks for your reply

I thought it also looked like some sort of coral but we are far from an ocean. Are there sorts of coral in fresh water lakes? Thanks for your reply.

The Himalayas have sea-shell fossils at the tops. The World has shifted much in the last 350,000,000 years (coral was VERY common in the Devonian Period).

In the Devonian most of Michigian was under a salt-water bay.

Michigan was part of the ocean.. Petoskey stones are fossilized coral and they are found here in Mi as well as are other sea fossils.

It's so exciting to possibly have a rock that may be that old. I'll be keeping my eyes to the ground every time I walking through the woods.
thank you's for your help

River gravels turn up small pieces of fossils/corals in Mi..inch or two and been tumbled ,broken up. Yours is a great piece from somewhere..

I find similar fossils often on the beaches of Lake Michigan ( Illinois side). It's always so much fun.
