Those of you that hunt crop fields, do you have any idea how old the fields are? i.e. have they always been fields, or maybe homesteads long gone? My uncle owns a farm that he has worked since he was a child with my grandfather, now he's 65 or so. Doesn't seem to old for a farm field, and I'm betting it's much older since the original house was 1750's. I've detected around the house, but with so much farming over the years, it's like an iron mat (welding, cutting, etc.)

I guess the real question is, how do you research the age of a crop field?

By the age of the house that once stood there I guess. ::) And in your case 1750's or older. Pound that site, remove the iron and then the good stuff will follow. Good luck

A field has always been there. When it first became a crop field is when the first person decided to plough and plant there. Try to detect out of throwing distance from the house/barns etc, which is where all the crap will be lol. Then later when bored do what Mike says. :)
