I've hit horse shoes in the cane fields at a good 2 feet in pitch mode at 4 kHz with boost with reactivity at 2, discrimination at 7.5 and sensitivity at 94. I would think a 10-20 lb Parrott shell would scream out at 2 - 3 feet.

The butt end of the Parrott shell I snagged with Deus rung up high (ferrous wraparound) even though it was a foot and half deep. I agree with the recommendations above, but look for those high tone ferrous wraparound signals if you happen to pass the coil over it because of the mass of metal.
